  • Don Trahan

Hi everyone, I was very interested in Don Trahans golf swing instruction about a year ago but decided to spend my money on some lessons locally. I am now suffering with a back problem that refuses to leave me in peace. It is an old injury that is constantly being aggravated. I am interested in the Trahan method because of the low impact on the lower back. Has anybody out there purchased the video series? Does it work? Is it worth the money? I know his son is successful using it , but can it work for an old hacker. Any feedback would be appreciated.
    Regards, Peter

A few. With mixed views, but at least one positive and relevant to your situation.

Thank you for your comments and direction,I did find on that site a comment from myself being less than complimentary, so I have obviously looked at it then. Terrible memory combined with a little desperation over my swing and I had forgotten

In hindsight, I'd have saved a fair amount of money had I just bought the book/manual. The DVD's are interesting but repetitive.
Didn't seem to help my back much (I have a fused lower spine) but it taught me to start using a more vertical swing, which seems to be working.
If you consider it as part of your "Golf Library" it's probably worth the money.
          Best regards...Wil

Thanks Wil I also have straightened up my swing but got that from the freebies.I think the site bdbl referred me to tells the story. I to have had the back op and was drawn to his three quarter "back friendly" approach to the swing. I have been put off buy the hard sell and I have visited 3 sites and been told 3 different prices, one of them requires you to sign up immediately because leaving that site will disqualify you from any further offers of that cheap price.Of course you can leave the site and come back as many times you like and still get the same "one time" offer. So that was just a straight out lie. That sort of thing really p#@%es me off. Have you found a pain free system ?
            Regards Peter

Peter, if you're a "body swinger" just a relaxed, easy 3/4 swing while trying to keep the left arm straight. I know; it's difficult to combine the two, especially with the driver.
Maybe a pre-game warm up (which I most of the time conveniently seem to forget)....Wil

I see a lot posted here about preventing back issues in the golf swing. I don't know what Trahan's videos say about preventing such issues. What I have read, and heard from a few sports doctors is for people to raise up on the back toe during the follow through. Raising up on the back toe helps to relieve the twisting, spine pressure that over the years could create a back issue. I was even told/taught this at a young age. I have been golfing on pretty regular basis for the past 50+ years and to this day I do not have any back issues. I might get some sore muscles every so often, but (knock on wood) never any spine issues. GJS

                  Re: Don Trahan

I bought the Don Trahan package about nine months ago. Basically,
he teaches a very upright swing which goes way above the plane as
defined by Hogan, etc. I found that it worked all right for one round
but after that, as with so many new methods, there were problems
galore. It is very much an arm swing rather than a whole body swing
so that the arms have to be swung down fast on this upright plane and
co-ordinated with the body pivot. This may well remove some of the
load on the back but I found myself fluffing, hooking and skying far too
many shots. Finally, communication is poor so many questions are unanswered and it appears that getting one's money back, although
promised, is extremely difficult. Having tried the method for almost the
stipulated year with very poor results, I am going to ask for my money back and see what happens!

                    Re: Don Trahan

Hi guys ,sorry about the tardy reply, I have been out of town for a week or so. First of all ,I have since read the book "golf for dummies"which I found to be a thoroughly entertaining and enlightening book, full of humour and great info. One section was titled "building your own swing". It pressed home the fact that no one pro has the same swing. I think the book"Nail It" tries to say the same thing and that is, as long as the club and body and hands are correct in the impact zone, it matters little(within loose guidelines) how they arrive there. For me a fairly upright swing plane with good posture, rolling my left foot on the backswing, to make up for the restrictions placed on me after the back surgery, and finishing well upright on the right toe seems to be working for me. I found that any problems are usually caused by incorrect ball position , wobbly head or incorrect timing of weight transfer from back foot to front. The main problem at the moment is when I try to get some fine tuning from our local pro, the first thing he does is to get my front foot firmly on the ground, even if it takes the whole lesson, and refuses to entertain the idea that it works for me. So I guess he doesn't need my money. Thank you all for the advice, I have certainly put it to good use. LeCorbier, I wish you well in trying to get your money back, I will be interested to know if you succeed.
                    Regards, Peter.

One of the other "methods" you may want to try is Jimmy Ballard's. Rocco Mediate went to him with a bad back that almost forced him to stop playing. Do not listen to people that will tell you he teaches a sway. If you want go to this site and I believe you can view his videos for free for a month http://www.golflink.com/tipsvideos/. He also sells a book and a dvd. I have no affiliation with him or the above site. Good luck.

I have used Jimmy Ballard's DVD. It is pretty good. It is kind of outdated, but for my handicap (bad), it's enough.
