I am a beginner and i would like to know where to aim when striking the ball with my irons. Some people have told me about 2 inches behind the ball. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: where to aim when hitting your irons
Hit the back of the ball, on the equator with the sweetspot of the club face, about three or four grooves up, slightly from inside the target line at an accelerating and descending angle of about 15 degrees; clear ?
Do not aim two inches behind the ball !!!

Re: where to aim when hitting your irons
Aiming to strike the ball is...for me...looking at the front of the ball. The part that you really can't see, but knowing it's there (front part facing the hole).
I like that point to focus on because this keeps me in front of the ball more (hands slightly ahead). The actual point of impact will be ball first, then anything after that is incidental...divot starts just after impact...never before.

i thought the divot was supposed to start after you hit the ball. it is like you are supposed to drive the ball into the ground so it pops out with spin. thank you for the reply to my post, this site is very helpful.

That is a good, a simple but really good idea. I have only been playing for 2 years and continue to learn, most often through GTO.

Avoid the four mis-hits in golf... fat, thin, heel and toe... by learning to hit the ball solidly thru practice on the field... the only time you hit an inch or so behind the ball is in the sand trap...

Re: where to aim when hitting your irons
Hi
i like to look just in front of the ball like Greg does. it makes me feel like i'm swing the club and and not "HITTING" at the ball it like the ball just gets in the way of the club.
i feel looking at the back of the ball or behind the ball makes you want to hit the ball and all sort of bad things seem to happen when i try to HIT the ball.
with looking just in front of the ball all i'm thinking about is my swing and swinging through the ball and that works really good for me.
cheers
bill

Re: where to aim when hitting your irons
I agree with the others. The notion of hitting down on the ball happens for me more with my weight shift and hand position naturally than trying to hit down as that steepens my swing too much. I just keep a parallel grip (weak) with both hands and my right in line with the club face and slap through the ball with my extended, artificial hand. I hover the club to make mentally sure I'm hitting the ball first and no the ground, which grounding the club seems to encourage.
