  • Arms popping out on takeaway.

Toe in the water here for the first time so go easy on me guys and girls!!

I play off ten and and last year I discoved how an actual golf ball works and the art of trapping and compressing the golf ball, one of the 3 skills that is often talked about on here I see. It's done wonders to my scoring irons up to say a 7 iron and when I deloft the short irons properly it's happy days with decent proper ball flight and backspin. I would encourage anyone who hits their irons high and wants more distance and a better ball flight to learn to hit down on the ball, wind, what wind?

Now the flip side of the coin, the driver is the worst club in the bag with arms cutting across the body and a nasty open club face and just to steep into the ball.

I can't help feeling that my takeaway is to blame. When I put my swing on video the arms and club just 'pop out' away from the shaft plane, it's the first move in my swing and I just can't stop it. I've tried more or less everything I can think of and the only thing that really works is to simply turn my body then set the wrists but this tends to put me under the shaft plane and if I don't set my wrists get's me really flat.

I am more of a hands and arms player and I do stand close to the ball and I tend to set the club late and have it shut at the top, faults that need attention but this arms popping out as my first movement has to be stopped as it's bugging me beyond belief. Help!!!!

Try pointing the club shaft along the extended Ball > Target line when you take it back.

      Fixed!!!

Just tried that in the office this morning, put it on tape and while there is still a little bit of 'pop out' it is much better and is definately the key thought for me. Get's me nicely in the quarter position that the swing factory book talks about, without any minipulation of the club and although only slow motion swings at the moment, looks like it may get me into that lovely half way back position which I crave. Can't wait to get on the practice ground now!!

Amazing that it's usually the simple advice or swing thought in this game that makes the most sense.

      Thanks Brian

Great, I hope it works out for you.

Keeping the butt end pointing at the line on the downswing also helps to keep on plane.

Welcome and remember we all had a "toe in the water" moment so no big deal and hope you enjoy the best golf forum around.
What you may be experiencing is tension in the arms which will make them pop out. your comment about being a handsy player also is a tip off that you are relying on small muscles too much. The chest turns the arms not arms turns the chest.
Loosen up your body and feel more of a flow rather than spasm.
Feel the weight of the club or you are too tense. Remember, the arms are just along for the ride, they really do no work; same for the hands.
