  • Ball keeps curving right like a banana

    Hi guys,

My first post on here, when hitting a wood/driver/fairway recovery wood, my ball always going right.

It starts off straight, but then curves right like a banana?

The odd few shots go straight, but I'm running out of ideas..

    help is much appreciated.

    Cheers

Get the back of your leading hand to face the target at impact. You are leaving the face open.

      Welcome to the Forum.

A couple of things you can do. You may possibly have a weak grip which results in the club face being open at impact. With your left hand on the grip, turn it a fraction to the right so that an extra knuckle is showing. This strengthens the grip and will help get the club face squarer at impact.

The most common problem with slicing I believe is golfers coming from an outside to inside swing path on the downswing. Basically the right arm takes over and forces the club to cut across the golf ball at impact. The good fix I used just a few weeks ago is this:-

On your downswing, try to make a conscious effort to let the left arm lead the golf club down and through impact. Try to keep the right arm and shoulder as quiet as possible. What this does is it allows the golf swing path to come through at the impact zone on a inside to outside path which results in better contact and possibly even a draw.

Give this a try, it worked for me and can work for you.

      Cheers

      Troy

        Stop swinging to the left.

          Hi guys,

After going to the range today, and trying out a number of your remedies, I have pretty much sorted it out.

I adjusted my grip, my stance, ball position, swing, and the swingpath.

1/2 in every 10, still slightly curve right, but MUCH better than before..

But I have the grounds to improve dramatically, if I can cut these out now, on a full round of golf!

Thank you all, it is much appreciated.

Re: Ball keeps curving right like a banana

Welcome. you will see that I am a big proponent/believer in swinging with a very relaxed motion as I constantly state in my posts, ad nauseum.
One reason for a slice other than coming into the ball from outside to in with an open clubface, is failure to allow the hands to release.
Why do we not allow the hands to release, either we are holding on for dear life or we have not properly hinged the wrists on the backswing so there is nothing to release.
Stand with a 7 iron held out in front of you and with your hands and arms very loose, turn the chest to the right(for righthanders) while keeping your head still, your back should more or less be pointing at the target. Now turn your chest back through center to the left with your back pointing opposite from the target.
What happened to your club, hands and arms-they hinged going back and unhinged coming through-they rotated in other words.
The feeling you want is one of effortlessness(sic); let the big muscles(chest/hips) work and leave the small ones(arms/hands) out of the swing
This will allow everything to work as it should.
Now take your address position with the 7 iron without a ball. Do the same thing as above, turn your chest going back without any tension in your arms or hands-no guiding of the club-just allow the body to dominate the club, as you turn the chest going back, allow the left knee to flex in and very slightly to the right-take a half swing.
If you don't feel the club hinging-you have stopped the motion with tension in your hands/arms. Wait for the club to hinge-feel it hinge before turning back the opposite way.
The thing about the golf swing is "you have to wait for it to happen", you can't force anything, just allow things to happen.
I could say alot more but this will give you the idea.
