  • Importance of Full Shoulder Turn- Is it Vital?

    Hi Guys

Can someone please share with me the benefits of completing a full shoulder turn? Say you are a mature age guy or someone that is not that flexible, how does not having a ful shoulder and gettign your back to the ball turn hurt your swing?

    thanks

Not getting a full shoulder turn shortens your swing arc which reduces clubhead speed.

That said - I've seen 80 year old men make a full shoulder turn. The secret is to pull from the trail side, not push from the target side.

Read my post under drills to improve flexibility but to answer your question, it is not necessary to turn 90 degrees although most will argue that is what we seek.
More important is how you use the big muscles, swinging in balance and with great tempo. Hitting the ball flush with an 80 degree turn will fly the ball longer and more accurately with a 90 degree turn hit off center.
I have a drill I do where I take just 1/3 swings but hinge my wrists, keep perfect balance and tempo, the ball flies off the clubface with a crisp, flush sound and goes within 10 yards of my fuller swing.

A full shoulder turn is relative to the individual golfer. There are probably more golfers out there who can't get to 90* than there are those who can. I know I can't get to 90*, and I don't think I actually ever did. The maximum shoulder turn I ever manufactured was what my hip turn allowed.

Unless your current club head release is near to perfect at post impact, I might suggest working on your release to make up some club head speed for a smaller shoulder turn. More than a few golfers release the club too early in the down swing, robbing themselves of those precious extra MPHs of club head speed. To my way of thinking the golfer should release the club head as close to "after impact" as possible. Not before, or even at impact. This ensures maximum club head speed regardless of how much shoulder turn is being used. It also ensures that the golfer is getting most out of the intended loft of the club they are using.

Another option to those with a shorten shoulder turn might be to read up on the swing the mechanics, and grip of Moe Norman's Natural golf swing. (Only Norman's version) The draw back with Norman's grip/swing is that it usually requires a lie angle change on the club heads to be effective. GJS

per peak performance golf, a limited 3/4 quarter shoulder turn is desirable and no loss of power. it is also more body friendly and more consistent, mike

As I have said, better to have 80 degrees, be on balance, and hit it flush than have 90 degrees, off balance because the turn throws one off and hit it off center.
"full" shoulder turn is only a relative term to each individual and there is no absolute on it. There are lots of examples of shorter turns but better swings.

It's primary importance is the positioning of the hands relative to the ball.

The more you turn, the flatter your hand path will be. No shoulder turn at all, lifting the arms will make the steepest plane possible.
