  • Non-Traditional swing

I want to preface this thread with a disclaimer. I have no affiliation with this company and I detest the shilling of products by makers of products unless they are a site sponsor.

I have been working on the Mike Austin swing method for 4+ years and getting fantastic results. Mike is 94 years old and was recognized by the PGA of America for 70 years of golf instruction on September 28, 2004. The guy is the real deal. A short list of accomplishments:

Helped Ben Hogan rework his swing after the car accident.
Inventor of the Iron Byron and the Stimpmeter.
World record holder of the longest drive on level ground in a sanctioned PGA tournament, 515 yards at age 64.
    Numerous long drive championships.
Student include: Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, Seve Ballestaros (sp), Ernie Els and VJ Singh.
Accomplished Opera Singer, Actor, professional Boxer. (ever wonder why Ernie Els hurt his hand boxing?)

It seems Mike has been holding his secrets close to him for 12 years now. But in the last two years has written and just released his closest guarded swing mechanics. His traditional swing mechanics were better that any other teacher I have ever studied. The new swing is a breakaway from the early 1900's based swing most use. Some players who have seen Mike in recent years are VJ Singh and Ernie Els. It is readily aparent in their release.

I have been focused on making this swing change for a time now and find it most amazing. A very relaxed motion that is not difficult on the body. Gandolf the great is exploring this swing as well. If anyone wants more information please email me at golfhelp01@yahoo.com. The series is How To Kill The Ball.

Hickory sticks have been out of vogue for years, why are we still swinging like we still have them? This is the swing for the next century.

          Foozler,

I have had many a conversation with Dr. Austin. He is quite a guy. He is a very private person. The pros and celebrities he teaches like to keep things low key. He is not a limelight teacher like a Pelz, Harrmon or Leadbetter.

He is a perfectionist, if you have a thick skin, you see Mike and check you ego at the door. Mike will amaze anyone with his knowledge of the golf swing, he's the only person I've ever spoken to that can tell you every bone and muscle that moves in any portion of the swing and why certain motions work better or worse than others. He understands motion and leverage and the science behind the swing not just the physics, he has a masters degree in physics, engineering, psycology (sp), 2 years of medical school and a doctorate in kinesiology the study of muscluar motion.

              Hi Guys,

I am relatively new to the game, and am trying to find a good swing methodology to learn over the winter months. I haven't heard much about Mike Austin Method apart from through this site. It sound like this guy is a real golf swing genius. Does he have centres for learning his method? I travel a lot, are there worldwide centres? The places I mainly visit are US, UK, Australia.

From what I have read I don't think there are specific centres set up by Mike Austin himself. I think there are a few teachers out there who claim to teach his methods, although where exactly they are I am not sure. I'll keep looking.

                  Re: Non-Traditional swing

You are right in the fact there are no centers at this time. There are several teachers that have studied under Mike and teach this method. Dan Shauger (California) has been with Mike since 1979 is probably the leading authority along with Mike Dunaway (Arkansas). There are a few teachers in Texas also but I would need to get info from Mike or Dan as to their location. I have been using the earlier method until recently, and switching to the new method. The arm motion is all I have to relearn, everything else is the same.

I have 2 students right now learning this method, both are junior golfers. Both have significantly increased distance and accuracy. I will be posting some swings in the near future so everyone can see it. I may be picking up one more student, I have to see what his commitment level and work ethic are.

I don't teach anyone who won't put in the hours to practice, definate Marine Corps mentality. I also will fire a student for lack of interest on their part. If I'm going to give them max effort, I expect the same in return.

www.aperfectswing.com has the details on the material to get anyone staarted. If you need help and have specific questions, i'll try to field questions. If I can't answer it, I can call Dan or Mike and get you an answer. The elements of this swing have been around quite a while, the entire concept and analysis have been done by Mike over a 70 year period. He is still alive and kickin' but in rather poor health these days. At 94 the mind is sharp but the body is giving out, sad to say. He has been teaching from a wheelchair lately in Studio City, California.

                    Ian,

I know, I'm working over the winter to get it down. It is the swing I'll be teaching from now on. The arm motion is better, easier and less effort to get max distance and accuracy out of the body.
