can anyone give me any tips / drills that will help me get my hands in front of the ball at impact. i cant seem to get them ahead of the ball when its in the middle of my stance, which maybe what causes me to hit the ball up. ( high cut, right hand facing up due to no release etc.)

ive seen many impact position images and know mine is horribly wrong.

Set up at address with your hands in the middle of your stance, that is where the hands should be at impact not forward. Stopping your hands there at impact, leaves the clubhead behind then whipping through impact and past center which then brings the followthrough in play.
Covering the ball with your chest at impact means having your chest at the ball position along with your hands.
Remember, the chest turns away with the clubhead at takeaway.

one important part of the impact is a straight left arm , flat left wrist and a slightly bent right arm. the right elbow should be closer to body near the right hip than the left elbow. if you look up the line you should see a separation of the 2 elbows which is more exaggerated with long clubs. if the right elbow is outside the left at impact you have come over the top.

ACCELERATE! Not just speed, but continuing to apply force PAST the ball.
