  • Golf Ball

This may have been addressed in an earlier post, but i have been looking over the forums and haven't seen anything on it really.

So does the actual golf ball itself really make that much of a distance in your game? I usually use Callaway warbird and Slazeneger golf balls. My HC is 19 and i like using the slazenger balls more, but i don't really see the difference in the balls, maybe because my HC is 19? Any thoughts. Thanks

The biggest difference will be on your short game. You will be able to control shots much easier with a soft-cover then a distance ball. You may get more distance on a distance ball, but what 10-15 yards off the tee are worth not being able to hold the green on your approach, and add the touch of chips...there is the difference.

Greg is right, the 3 and some of the softer 2 piece balls in the tour range expensive brands such as Titleist , Callaway and my favourite Nike platinum will show their capabilities around the greens. I like to know that my ball will drop and stop were as the harder distance balls may give you an extra 10 to 20 yards off the drive, but are totally unpredictable from 100 yards in. Even though my swing speed is not lightning , I know I only have to aim at the pin so it takes alot of guesswork out of my shots.

        Re: Golf Ball

thanks guys. i do tend to notice that in my shorter game when chipping on the green or hitting a iron to the green that it will hit the green and roll fast or go too far. I've wanted to try the titleist pro-v1 and the nike one..but i have been scared to put the money into them and not see much of a difference

I was the same money wise so I found a dealer in second hand balls.I chose the Nike one platinum as I had found one on course and was very impressed by it. If you choose "near mint" you should get balls that look brand new. They are not reconditioned or lake balls. I have used 2 dealers in OZ and the quality was the same. The Nikes were cheaper than the Titlest prov1's and I can't tell the difference except the Nikes don't cut up as quickly. I got 4 dozen for $95 AU delivered from Ballbusters, so at that price I could happily afford them.

          Best regards Peter.

Thanks. I will have to look into that. $95 for 4 Dozen of the nike's sounds like a pretty legit deal.

                Titleist

It's probably not that much of a difference when you are a high handicapper say 21 plus. But when you get down a lot lower I have found personally it does make a difference particularly in your middle to short irons shots and chipping.

I have used the Titleist Pro-V1x for about 5 years now and love them. It's nice to know when I hit a solid iron to a green that more often than not it's going to hold and give me a good chance of making a par. They help with chipping as well because I can control the ball a lot better thus helping judge the distance to the flagstick.

As far as distance off the tee is concerned I haven't really experimented with but according to statistics online they do travel further as well. A large percentage of the pros use them as well so I figure if it's good enough for them it's good enough for me.

Give a better 3 piece ball a try, but just don't expect them to make instant improvement in your golf game. You still need a sound golf swing with all the basics in place.

                  Re: Golf Ball

usually harder cheaper balls fly longer and spin less, thus increasing accuracy. They also tend to fly higher (frictional coefficient is lower so a higher launch angle). So it depends on what greens you play. In the summer when they are hard and bouncy you may wish to choose the softer balls to try and regain some spin. But in the winter the greens stop dead so it would be more beneficial to be going in with 3 clubs less, use the harder ball.

But ultimately it depends on your style of play. I was a very good amateur playing with dunlop DDH's. But am now a professional and play with titleists but honestly i am no better with the expensive balls. Sure it stops faster with a soft ball, but i am going in with a 9 iron instead of a 6 when i use a hard ball
