  • Help with Flattening Swing

I have really high natural trajectory with all my clubs which I feel causes me to lose a lot of distance. Also, if it is windy, I am in really trouble. Recently I purchased a new Ping i15, 8*, x-stiff driver. I got this one because I have a very steep swing path. When we analyized my swing my spin rate with my old driver (Cleveland HiBore XL, 9.5*, Stiff) was 7500 rpm. With the ping I got it down to 5000rpm with an average swing speed of 110mph. I really want to be able to control/lower my trajectory for all clubs but especially the driver. My question is how do I flatten my swing?

Hi, see my post "driving woes cured for now" if you can manage to sweep the ball off a lower tee it will give you a piecing trajectory. I had the same problem, amongst others, and this works

A high trajectory with your driver is not really a problem, the problem is the type of trajectory. Imagine two ball flight paths, one that looks like a rainbow and the other like a turned over hockey stick.

If you hit the ball with a positive angle of attack using a low lofted driver then you should be able to get a rainbow type ball flight, this will be created with low spin and will give maximum carry and roll on landing due to the lower spin.

If you hit the ball on a downward angle of attack then you will create more spin and especially with higher loft, this will launch the ball high but the high spin will hold it up initially, the ball will drop almost vertically as the spin reduces, this 'Hockey Stick' shaped path will lessen carry and roll due to the way the ball drops off.

You will also need to flatten your swing and a good way to do this is to tee the ball high and forward, then create the image of a nail sticking out of the back of your balls equator, either horizontal or even pointing slightly upwards. Think of using the clubface as if it was a long hammer that you will drive the nail into and through the ball.

        Re: Help with Flattening Swing

        hi
with my type of swing i have a flat sweeping swing and like Brian said i need a high tee and it forward in my stance so i contacting the ball just as i start to swing upwards again, if i have the ball back just a little in my stance i get the hockey stick flight that Brain talks about, catching the ball on the downswing with the driver gives you a high flight with a lot of back spin but you lose distance too. playing the ball forward and catching it just on the upswing gives you the right amount of backspin.
try playing the ball forward on a high tee till you find the right spot. it often feels way to far forward at first.
        cheers
        Bill
