Do you have problems with inconsistent shot direction? Sometimes the ball flies to the right, sometimes to the left? Sometimes a push, fade or slice, sometimes a pull, draw or hook?

You probably fiddle with your grip and alignment (which is a good place to start). You then try to become more or less active with your wrists, try using more or less body rotation but the shots still miss left or right

Another thing to check is what is happening with your elbows, yes elbows!! Try this: Address the ball with a 7 iron, now keep your arms extended with the elbows pulled in so that they are fairly close together and the right elbow points out towards the right hip and the left elbow points towards the left hip.

Now keeping your left elbow extended bow your right elbow out towards the right: What happens to the clubface? Yes, it opens.

Now return to the position with both arms extended and bow the left elbow out to the left, what happens to the clubface now? Yes, it closes.

Traditional teaching asks you to drop the right elbow down close to the right hip at the start of the downswing, this is a good move to get the club into the inside 'slot' The problem is that if the right arm does not start to straighten as it comes into impact the clubface will be held open creating a push, fade or slice, depending on the severity.

Likewise, if the left elbow chicken wings out in the downswing then the clubface will be pulled shut likening a pull, draw or hook to be created.

Try to ensure that both arms and elbows are fully extended just after impact to generate a powerfull on target shot.

    Interesting

    Great thread Brian.

Some great advice there and something you don't read too much about when it comes to hitting straighter golf shots.

Love the last part about keeping both arms full extended after impact. This makes a lot of sense and is something that every golfer should be striving to accomplish.

      Re: open/closed face

A big part of what Jimmy Ballard teaches has to do with the elbows and not creating "angles" with them. he has some good free videos on youtube or golflink.

        chicken wing

What drills do you recommend to keep that extension after impact and avoid the dreaded chicken wing. I believe this is why most of my shots with every club are either pulled shots or hooks.
