  • Question for Brian

My 3 wood has a 46" shaft and suddenly I have been topping or not striking very well.
Any suggestions(other than shortening the shaft).

    Re: Question for Brian

I assume that you have been successful with the 46" shaft previously? If so then it should still be OK. I also assume the problem is when hitting from the fairway.

As we know topping is where the bottom of the clubface is contacting the ball too high up. You will need to consider what is causing this; the main culprits tend to be letting the swing arc get too far back so the clubface is ascending into the ball, or the clubface coming down into the ball with the swing arc too high.

I like this video from Shawn Clements on 'Skipping the face off the turf'

I hope this is of some help.

      46"!

You're either very tall, or very strong, or very both. An off-the-rack DRIVER is 46" long these days...

Very tall=no, very strong=yes. I use a 48" driver and had the 3 wood made with 46" which I hit both very long. I may be sliding a little with 3 wood as it just happened yesterday.

Finally gave up on the XX 46" 3 wood shaft; it weighed out today at E8, way to much for an old man.
Put a regular length XX shaft in it and now back to hitting it well.
The E8 made it too hard to load, that's why I was not hitting it well. These kind of things can happen suddenly due to age, arthritis, etc.
If it happens, own up to it and make the change that is needed; why suffer any more than this game makes us suffer in the usual course of things that happen.
          LOL
