  • Weight distribution at address

I had always read that your weight should be towards the balls of your feet at address. However I recently tried to transfer the weight back towards the center of my feet and maybe a touch towards the heel and whilst it felt like I was "sitting back" a little, I found I was able to swing easier and it seemed more effortless. Wondering if this is the ideal method and what should the feeling be when you're over the ball?

That old weight on balls of feet has gotten more folks into trouble, ie. lunging, poor weight transfer, OTT, etc.
You are correct in having the weight solidly between balls of feet and heels so you are more centered. You want to feel like your balance is running down the middle of the feet not forward or back.
Try hitting balls with the feet together and weight balanced, it's a great feel if you are not used to it.

I concur with keiko. I've often hit balls "on my heels" and thought "I really got away with one - and I hit it really solid".

I now have my balance close to the midpoint between the balls of my feet and the heel - and hit a lot of solid shots.

Balls of feet makes sense for sports in which you need to make an explosive directional move. Where are you going in golf? Get grounded and solid!

I've spoke with Dr. Neal, CEO of Golf BioDynamics at Doral. So you could say if there was one person who is an authority on biomechanics of the golf swing, it would be him.

The old concept that good players start on the balls of their feet and swing back to their heels on their back-swing is FALSE. They go center of feet to center of right foot then center of left foot. It does not go from toe to heel to toe.

I'm certainly no BioDynamics expert but it makes sense as being centered allows you to engage the core and apply power in a way that being on balls wouldnt as well as the issue of being fully grounded/balanced at the start of the swing.

Before I asked Dr. Neal I just assumed that we have an arch in our foot for the same reason the Romans built them.

We have known for 25 years or more that balance is achieved by being centered whether it's martial arts, gymnastics or golf. Many myths were propagated by those who thought they were swinging a certain way but who were not, it was just between their ears.
The "athletic position" everyone talked about was not on the balls of the feet because that would be off balance due to the weight being predominately forward.
              These are not new theories.
