  • Weight Distribution

How should you distribute your weight when hitting different clubs? I'm right handed, so should I be favouring the left side for lofted clubs, (sw, pw, 9 and 8 irons). More centred on mid loft clubs (7, 6, 5) and favouring my right side on long irons and woods?

    Re: Weight Distribution

For all full swings, I have my weight 45/55 (L/R) at address.

For finesse (less than full) swings - normally wedges - I keep myself balanced equally between my feet.

I try and keep 50/50 with every club. It is simply the positioning of the ball that places your central weight either level with or behind the ball. Example, with a driver the ball position is opposite left heel which means with a 50/50 weight distribution in your feet your center of gravity is behind the ball, which helps for shallow angle of attack from clubhead.

I would like to see more commentary on this issue. A golf instructor with whom I took lessons encouraged me to put more weight on my left side when using my high irons, especially PW, 9, 8, 7. He suggested as much as a 60/40 (L/R) distribution. Is this wrong or something you that can vary?

If not 50/50, put more weight on your right side. You are going to transfer weight right as soon as you start your takeaway. Having the weight a bit more on the right side at address will help prevent a sway from creeping into your swing.

For full shots where you're really trying to use the same basic swing for every club in the bag then a 50:50 weight distribution each time seems the sensible approach to me.

For punch shots or knockdowns with a wedge, 9 or 8 then I tend to keep a little more weight on my left side as it helps me make better contact by keeping the hands in front of the ball at impact.

              Re: Weight Distribution

              I always recommend:

              1. SW-9iron: 70/30 left/right
              2. 8-iron to 6-iron: 50/50
              3. 6-iron to 3-iron: 40/60 left/right
              4. woods: 30/70 left/right

It sounds rather technical but just make sure that as the clubs get longer, more and more weight starts on the right.
