  • Backswing swing plane help!

This has been by far my worst golf season yet and this is mainly because I have lost the consistency and repeatability of my swing. I'm a big believer that the first 2 feet or so of the backswing pretty much decides how the rest of it will go (within reason) and so while flicking through Facebook I was quite alarmed by the significant differences in swing planes on my backswing - one from 18 months ago at Welton Manor and one from this week at Belton Woods. I'm unsure whether one is too steep or the other is too flat... or whether they're both within the range of being acceptable/ both utter rubbish! Handi has gone from 10 to nearly 13 in 18 months.

    Any ideas anybody?!

    Thanks, DiStanio

There is a problem that they are held on 'Facebook' and there is no auto link from this site. Try uploading the pictures from 'Additional Options' and 'Manage Attachments' You can see these when you Edit your post.

The swing on the left looks anti-hook while the second one seems more on plane but with little to no wrist action.

I think you need to work on clubface for a while.

Line up at a target then hit some pushes. Then line up at the same target and hit some pulls. Really work the face to do this. Alternate between shots until you get a really good feel of what closes and opens the face and can do it consistently.

Now hit some 5 irons at a 100 yard marker or 150 yard marker. Again emphasizing face control.

Unless you're ballooning each shot with giant curve, the plane is probably not the problem in your golf swing.

Your latest picture looks like you are too laid off at the top, this will tend to create slices and snap hooks due to the club getting stuck behind you in the downswing.

This video may give you some ideas on what to work on:

Not trying to be a contrarian here Brian but I don't think he's laid off at all. Looks like he's right on plane.

Ah! yes. I can see better now, his wrists are not cocked, I thought he had the club pointing left of target.

                  Re: Backswing swing plane help!

You need more wrist hinge before you can decide about swing plane, frankly, no one hits the ball with their backswing and one can argue that the backswing doesn't matter much as long as one gets proper shoulder turn with relaxed arms and wrists/hands.
Try removing tension from those arms and hands and just start by hitting half swing shots without worrying about distance. Take a 7 iron and just stand with your feet together and take half swings while keeping your arms and hands very loose so they work the hinging you need.
When you can "feel" the hands allowing the wrists to hinge, take the club to the top and just allow the right elbow to drop down without any force from the arms. This drop down move will allow you to hit the ball crisply regardless of your swing plane.
You are frankly putting the cart before the horse at this point until you can get the hands to be passive.

Many thanks, chaps. I have tried out a few of your ideas down the range to good effect and I look forward to giving them a go on the course this weekend. I'm grateful for your feedback. DiStanio
