  • Loss of form

    Good evening all,

I have just played this afternoon and have been unable to reach 200yds with 3 wood or driver yet i can consistently hit my 4 iron 180 and 3 iron 190. I even had to resort to hitting these clubs off the tee to keep me in play. I play off 6 and possess a good short game but my recent form with woods has been appalling. I have had so many lessons over tha past 2 years that I would have expected some results but I continue to frustarte myself with the driver especially. Tried lots of drivers/shafts/lofts and always hit them poorly. Does not matter who i play with, handicap wise I am always the shortest off the tee and just cannot figure it out. Prime example today, my pal off 7 hit driver and so did I on a par 4. He hit a wedge for his second and I (at least 50yds behind) had to hit a 4 iron. Very disillusioned as i have been like this for months now and its starting to really affect my enjoyment of the game.

    Ideas/suggestions welcomed please.

There can be a number of things going wrong. Can you tell us about your ball flight with your driver, does it balloon high and suddenly drop down out the sky, does it take off low and fall to the ground early, or something else?

      Brian,

It balloons mostly. I hit across the ball all the time with the driver and 3 wood and it is so frustrating when I can hit my irons as well as i usually do. My driver shots nearly always have left to right curve on them, but occasionally i will get a pull/pull hook.

        Andy,

Try this to start with your driver. At address pull your right foot (Trail foot) back around three inches so it is opening your stance. Strengthen your grip so that your right hand works more under the shaft. Work on taking the club back low and let it swing more around your body on a shallower swing, keep your arms and wrists loose but allow the club to start releasing earlier in the downswing while striking the left rear quadrant of the ball.

This should start to bend the ball flight from right to left, exaggerate it a bit to start with and dont worry if it starts hooking at this point. When you can do this repeatedly then make some small adjustments with the back foot and grip strength to reduce the ball flight to a nice draw.

Let me know how you get on.

          Thanks Brian,

I shall try that as soon as possible. My own feeling is that the sequence of my swing goes to pieces with a wood yet is fine with an iron for some reason?

          regards,

          Andy

            Hi Brian,

Worked to some degree but feels very strange. Hit a few blocks and thin shots too. Will keep at it.

Try playing the ball a little further back in your stance and teed a little higher.
