  • Please Help Me Get Back

    -- On Track.

I have been in a dark funk for a good while (with irons). I am hiting my woods and highbrids AOK- no problem. The thing is my irons have gone away? I have always hit my irons a bit left and a little fat at times. The problem is currently, it is more like a severe pull and very fat! When hitting off hard pan the iron slips underneath the ball. The funny thing, is that it does not really "feel" like I am off plane or doing something dumb at all when I swing irons? Can anyone help me get back on track?

    Thanks -Bruce A

    Video's always best...

That said I played with a golfer the other day who had the same thing going - chunks and pulls.

However, their issue was that they'd load up their right side (RH golfer), but rarely get back to their left. It didn't help their swing was a chop from the top (versus a lower or mid body lead).

After 6 holes of fantastic drivers and brutal irons, I asked if I could offer a touch of advice.

I had them put all their weight on their lead leg, and make some swings keeping their weight forward, noticing where they made the divot. I then told them to address the ball keeping the divot on the target side of the ball.

I enjoyed 3 holes of good trajectory shots out of this golfer - and they enjoyed it too.

So you may want to try it - get your weight target side and keep it there throughout the swing.

It's a bandaid to be sure - but you can at least get the ball around the course until you can see someone who can diagnose the problem.

Sorry to simplify this but could be just ball position, have you tried moving the ball position back a tad?

        Spot On

Yes I agree with both pieces of advice. The basics of proper weight shift and correct ball position will quite often lead to better ball striking.

At times when I used to pull / fat shots I had the habit of making an outside to inside golf swing. Which means the club cuts across the ball at impact either producing a slice/push or a straight left pull because the club face was shut/closed.

So, the only other thing to add would be to check to ensure you are making your downswing from an inside to outside swing path.

        Hope this helps.
