  • Compensate or not?

Should you try to close the clubface or should you just let passive arms and centrifugal force do the job?

I know that when I intentionally try to close the clubface to prevent my natural fade/slice it can work - but not consistently. I can square up the clubface by a number of methods:

    1. I can deliberately slow down my arms just before impact to let the clubface catch up.
    2. I can turn my arms anticlockwise prior to impact.
    3. I can choose to not cock or hinge my wrists during the swing.
    4. I can throw the clubhead at the ball doing everything I can to let it win the race to the ball - even trying to 'flip' it like a flail.
    5. I can concentrate on holding my left shoulder in place at the top of my backswing and swinging through very quickly using my left arm only (using my right arm as well messes the swing up).
    6. Getting to the top and holding the bent right wrist down into impact with lag and attempting to close the face by turning through the shot.

I get the follwing results when I try the above:

    1. This works but distance is compromised.
    2. Very hard to time properly.
    3. Again poor distance but very accurate.
    4. Too hit and miss with tops or fat shots.
    5. Seems to be the best of the bunch but requires a lot of left arm triceps effort.
    6. Fairly accurate but not overly so and poor distance.

I see a lot of instruction that tells the aspiring golfer to use passive hands and arms but that just doesn't work for me. Is there a way of swinging effortlessly and consistently without any compensations or do all golfers have in-swing adjustments to some degree?

Are there other methods that I haven't listed?

    Try to strengthen your grip.
I like these three videos, I hope they may help you.

I can certainly sympathize with the OP. I've probably tried all the techniques noted. I play with a neutral or even slightly weak grip, as a consequence hit the ball accurately with a slight fade on almost all shots (slices when I come OTT). While I score well with this technique, I only drive the ball 220-240 or so.

I have made several attempts to make my grip stronger or change my setup in order to hit draws but when I do all hell breaks loose. Hit a ton of balls and seen different instructors. While I am consistent and have a good short game I realize that I have to hit the ball longer and be able to hit draws in order to get into the single digits (play off 12).

      What a game.

When the clubface contacts the ball square or even slightly closed you will feel better contact and feel that the ball compresses more, an open face will cut across, create more loft and reduce distance. Maybe you should try what Shawn suggests and close the clubface slightly while maintaining a neutral grip.

Yes, I do hit the ball very high. I will try just closed the face a bit, never occured to me to do this on regular swings, but I am really good at hitting shut faced knockdowns and punches. I think this will work.
