  • Creating Hip or Lower Body Resistance

    Hi Guys

Recently I have been analyzing my swing, and one of the thigns I have noticed at the top of my backswing, was that my hips have rotated too much. You know how they say turn you shoulders 90 degrees and hips about 45 degrees ( and the larger the differential between shoulder turn and hip turn the more power).

In terms of resisting more with my hips, I am already doing those Mel Sole stretches on U tube, but I wanted to ask you guys advice on turning my right foot inwards slightly at address to force my hips to be quieter in my backswing.

Assuming you are a right hander, I have heard some people like to flare out their right foot at address to help with a fuller turn. On the flip side, what are your thoughts or dangers or turning my right foot inwards a little to creat extra resistance with my hip?

    thanks

Re: Creating Hip or Lower Body Resistance

I'd suggest to stop moving your hips in the backswing.

Yoda moment: I didn't say don't let them move, I said don't move them.

What I mean here is that many golfers will actively turn their hips and over-rotate them.

If you turn your shoulders all the way until your back is facing the target, they will naturally pull your hips to 45. They end up there. They don't get put there.

Hips at 45 is a result, not an action.

Re: Creating Hip or Lower Body Resistance

The only reason to restrict lower body turn is if your right shoulder is getting too deep and away from the ball. If your shoulder gets too deep then you could end up approaching the ball too much from the inside and be "under plane".

Now, you may be turning them incorrectly which is a whole different problem.

As a general rule of thumb though, the right foot should be perpendicular to the target line. Turning it out (aka flaring it open) will allow the hips and shoulders to turn more in the backswing. Turning the foot in (pigeon toe) will limit the hip turn and the shoulders, but help stretch the left lat muscle.

Keep the flex in the back leg, this will resist the hip turn correctly.
