  • Distance with Irons

    Looking for a pointer:

I am a 12 hcp, and a very good ball striker with both woods and irons. My problem is distance with my irons. I hit my driver 285, my three wood 250, and my 18 degree hybrid about 220. I consider those to be fine distances. On the other hand, I struggle with distance on my irons. Pitching Wedge only about 95yds, seven iron only about 155yrds, and less than 200 on my 3 iron. I tend to pull about two clubs more than my playing partners on any given par three.

I have hit many different irons on launch monitors to make sure it was not a loft issue with my irons, but I always get the same results.

I was hoping to get some quick pointers for more distance out of my irons.

Thanks in advance, any advise is appreciated.

I don't know if I would be of any help, but with out a video of your swing it's very difficult to quess what is going on. Maybe even a video of both a drive and an iron shot?

A 155 yard seven iron is not "bad" - it's an easy relaxed swing with out much effort. I've played good rounds with that kind of swing:-) Very consistent.

I play my seven iron about 160 yards ( 146 meters).

What kind of height you getting with your irons? my view is if you get 285 with driver then it would be fair to say you should get approx 170/175 with 7 iron.

I would guess your ball is high, and the cause maybe you are just getting your hands under the ball slightly at impact thus giving more loft/ height and less distance.

Be interesting to hear your response.

      Killer.

Killer, you are right. I played 36 holes over the weekend and focused more on having my hands further in front of the ball at address, this helped tremendously. My distance was much better. I almost felt as if I was exaggerating the forward position of my hands compared to where they normally are at address, but as the day went on I began to feel much more comfortable.

I realized that I was using way to much wrist was adding loft to the club like you stated above. My 5 iron had the trajectory of a 9 iron. Keeping my hands out in front helped me hit down on the ball, and added 10-12 yards per club.

Hannu, I will try to get a video up soon.

        Thanks guys.

Sounds like your a "flipper". Plenty of info on the site to fix it. Good luck.
