  • Sequencing the downswing

    Hi everyone,

I am still struggling with my driver and 3 wood which I always come across quite a lot. Even when I try to swing in to out as a thought I still start the ball way left and all my drives are hit with very weak cut spin. I do not seem to have the same problem with my irons???????? I hit my 4 iron about 185 yards but the divots are always pointing left of target.
My pal seems to think that my sequencing is out but I need some drills to get my my body parts moving in the right order. Any suggestions?
My pal had me trying to start the downswing with planting weight on the front foot just before the backswing had finished and this produced some good shots. The best shots felt as though my arms were being pulled into the impact area as opposed to my usual lash with the arms in an attempt to produce power.
Any drills/suggestions for correct motion would be gratefully received.

    Re: Sequencing the downswing

Your pal is right - stop flailing (lashing) at the ball with your arms. There's power in them thar hips!

Here's the proof. Have your pal hold onto a club tightly, and you try to pull him off balance or the club out of his hands. Try it with just your arms pulling.
Now try it by turning your body.

If you're hitting the pull-cut, you've likely got the ball a little far forward - when I try for a little better AoA and a scooch more distance, I often hit the same shot as I move the ball up a little.

Thanks Low Post, I have just found a mizuno video of dennis Pugh demonstrating that very thing. Now for the hard part, cos when I try to do just that I lose the ball way right in a block.

      regards,

      Andy

        Control your clubface!

When I get into blocks and pulls, it usually points to inconsistent ball position. Straight ball flight tells me that the face is square to the path - get the path going down the line!

Ouch! Tried to get used to a hip shift and dropping my arms but I think my hips shift too quick then everything else speeds up around it. Yet on sunday in the fiddle, I have 165yds to the green and an enormous tree up ahead. Must get over so take an eight iron, knowing I only hit it 140 so this has to be a lay up. What happens? I know you are all already there, I take an easy swing and look up to see the ball land on the green!!! So how do others get this beautifully tranqil, languid swing which converts to power???? Any drills would be gratefully accepted.

          Andy.
