  • hovering your driver

This past weekend while waiting for the snow to melt I hit some golf balls at a local driving range with heated stalls. Before hitting i usally warmup with my orange swing trainor. This device (one of many) helps me maintain balance throughout my swing. Now while warming up the orange ball is off the ground a few inches while swinging it. After warming up I hit a few drives and they are straight and long. When things start to go a little off I go back to the swing trainor make a few swings and then back to hitting drives with the same result, long and straight. Now when I am swinging the trainor and then the driver the one thing that I find that I was doing different is the driver head is on the ground before starting my back swing and the trainor is off the ground because you don't want to hit the orange ball on the ground during the swing. So I decided to hover the driver off the ground. It took a little getting used to but when i did it was amazing. Ball after ball was straight and long. I felt more relaxed in my arms, hands and shoulders. It was great. Now, first is this something that other golfers do and second can you do this with all your clubs (irons, hybrid, 3 wood etc). I didn't hit my irons at the range that day but will next time I go.
    Thanks

    Re: hovering your driver

I do this all the time. I only hit popups when I ground my driver.

The other thing to watch when you ground your driver (if you tee it high) is that you don't center the driver on the ground to the ball. Line it up (on the grounnd) with the toe. To prove it, setup like you're going to toe it, then lift the driver without manipulation. "Magically" the middle of the face meets the ball.
