  • Benefits of a Transfer

    Hi Guys

What do you guys list as the benefits of a proper weight transfer (in partcular finishing with your weight on your front foot after completing your swing). I know for me, I very very often quit on the ball, and often end with my weight on my back foot.

Do you guys have any suggestions or swing thoughts on how to complete you weight transfer? The only one i have been think of late has been to say to my self to complete follow through to the point the club touches the back of my neck and try to end with my body/chest facing the target. Do you guys have other pointers i can try and remember for this?

Also do you think it can add an extra 20-30 metres on your drive if you do a proper weight shift?

    cheers

    Weight Shift

    Hi Mahbo,

For me the best drill to work on for proper weight shift is to practice your golf swing and finish your follow through with your right foot off the ground with the weight resting on the balls of this foot. This ensures you have correctly transferred all of your weight to your left side (for right hander). You can practice this at home without a club as well, pretty much anywhere.

As far as extra distance is concerned with a proper weight shift, the answer is yes. Absolutely, it will help you get better clubhead speed and also product better timing which all adds up to more distance.

    Cheers

      Re: Weight Shift

Mahbo, to see the effects of weight transfer, try this:

Get two balls which are the same (ie a pair of baseballs, golf balls, footballs, basketballs, etc)

With all your weight on your back foot, throw a ball as far as you can.
Now allow your weight to transfer forward as you throw the ball as far as you can.

I guarantee the second ball goes further. Proper weight transfer helps create that 'effortless power'.

As for the 'fire and fall back' driver swing, I'm not necessarily convinced it's all that bad for distance. Look at LD guys - their weight is clearly centered at impact, not forward.

        Re: Weight Shift

Hitting off the back foot is the worst, worst, WORST fault, IMO, and it has much less to do with weight shift as it does with the need to be hitting off the front foot. Try it. .Hit some iron shots off the ground with the weight stuck on the back foot, never moving forward, and then hit some iron shots with the weight stuck on the front foot, never moving back. Which way is better? (Your front foot shots might be better than your normal shots. Anyone had any success with Stack and Tilt?)

Finishing on your front foot with the back foot on the toes indicates a weight transfer but does NOT ensure a PROPER weight transfer. Many, many players are too late with their shift back to the front foot. It "looks" like a proper shift, but it is still hitting off the back foot if it’s too late.

Beyond that, weight shift DONE CORRECTLY can be a great asset to power and rhythm.

The relevant point here is how early and fast Sandlowski unloads his back foot and plants his front foot. First move from the top. Also note that he is not "pushing off" the back foot first. He is LIFTING his back heel up.
