duck hook

i'm having a bit of a bad time with a hook at the moment.at first i thought it was down to the shafts i was playing with but now i'm not too sure.

i got a driver cheap because i had to kit myself out again and it was fitted with a regular shaft,i knew this wouldn't be stiff enough and was expecting a hook which i got but i now have a g10 fitted with a x stiff shaft and the hook is still there......

is it maybe more to do with my swing?i have a stiff shaft coming but i'm now thinking that won't make a difference if the problem lies with my swing.

If it's a duck hook then you will have a combination of your clubface closed at impact and your swingpath coming very in to out. Make sure you are making a full shoulder turn, weaken your grip a little and try not taking the club back too much inside. Keep the club moving slightly outside in the backswing and drop it back inside on the downswing.

thanks for that.i've had a look and i think my swing may be coming in on the inside.when i get the chance i'll need to get a video of a swing so i can see for sure.i was hitting it very good on monday night there and the driver was going very well.

Had the same problem a couple of years ago I guess, Brian gave me the same advice then and it worked . As long as I complete my backswing and don't rush the transition I'm OK , well at least from that particular fault,

Brians advice is good.

A hook is caused by the face being too closed to the path. you can solve it in two ways, either by bringing the path back squarer or finding a way to open the face more, ideally a combination of both.

In an ideal situation your path would be aimed at the target. You can check this with your divot, although a little harder to do with driver. If your divot aims to the right, try to make it squarer to the target either by aiming your body further left like Lee Trevino, or by swinging more left (try imagining a nail through the ball aimed at the target, now hammer the nail). To open the clubface more either weaken your grip, aim the culface more right (then grip it) and/or use less rotation through impact - more of a karate chop action with the right hand than a topspin tennis shot. Keep rehearsing impact, come into impact in waggles with the face more open and the club cutting across left more should help with the preparation too.

But like i always ssay, its not rocket science, its just a closed face to the path. Your job now is to take this advice, tinker with it til you find YOUR way of acheiveing the square path, square face combo that pros have. There are so many ways to do it though, have fun

thanks for the replies people,i've made a few vids and i'll post them up asap.the first 2 are fo me hitting a 6 iron relatively easy.it was still a full swing and i was trying to take away to the outside.they both went quite well but still had a draw/hook.i would say it was more of a draw and both balls ended up about 15yrd left of the hole pin high.

the other 2 vids are of me hitting the driver and i noticed my stance is slightly closed,i think i also tried to take it away slightly to the outside but i hit them both very poor.one was a duck hook and the other was a hook/duck hook which went relatively well...roughly 275 yrds.

its kind of a pull hook but i cant see if its caused by path out to in or just an overly closed face, In either respects the face is too closed so that is the first port of call. Where does your divot point with your irons, this owuld be a good indication of path. Sorry but i need to see a slower frame rate to analyse properly. Impact is very sensitive.

i'll have a try at editing the vids to see if i can slow it down,when i edit the vids with the intelli studio it doesn't seem to let me upload them to youtube.....not sure why.when i have checked my divots they seem to be aiming to the right.
