  • Coming over the top..........

    Hi Guys
Have been struggling with this issue for as long as I can remember. My irons not so bad, but with the 3 woods in my bag this problem is very evident. Please help me, I am lacking distance and accuracy off the tee and with my fairway woods on long shots to the green.

    Re: Coming over the top..........

    Hi Collie,

Firstly mate you need to loose this focus of coming over the top, and move your focus to the ball, I am sure you have heard all the diffent, hips first, drop arms etc etc etc.

However my opinion is simply focus on the ball, after all thats the task, give a child a club and his only focus would be on the ball, hammer a nail into the wall your focus is on the nail ,not how you swing the hammer.

Now: Work as much as you like on getting you set up square, athletic etc no problem, now look at the ball and visulise the club face coming down into the ball, from the inside and hitting it, nothing else or it wont work. you can try some shots with your feet together first I find this a good way of reinforcing the arc into the ball from the inside.

It is really as simple as that.

    Ian.

great tips from Ian and i agree wholeheartedly. Change your idea (conscious or subconsious concept) of impact. Working on impact directly and visualising it correctly. Work on getting your divot to aim straighter (in any way that suits you) and then its just a case of getting the clubface square to it.

The movement will respond to impact, not the other way around

        Re: Coming over the top..........

hitting the 3 wood off the fairway is one of the hardest shots in my opinion. a lot of factors have to be taken into consideration, how you grip your club, the kind of fairway wood you're using, the lie of the ball and of course how you swing the club. if you think you have these all covered, visualizing and feeling your swing is now the key. make practice swings and feel where the clubhead is going. feel the plane. and when you make the shot, concentrate on that feel rather than focusing on the ball. don't be ball-bound. rather be swing-bound.

          Re: Coming over the top..........

Coming over the top can be caused by a number of things, straightening the right leg on takeaway, starting the downswing with the shoulders,, and a flying elbow. My suggestion would be to try some 3/4 swings keeping your right elbow tucked at your side and focus on the bottom of the ball! If you focus on the bottom it is a guarantee your head will stay behind the ball and will cease coming over the top.

            Perfect

These were all great pieces of advice members. I love the tips about working on practicing keeping the feet together during practice golf shots. Also, keeping the right elbow tucked closer to the chest during the downswing.

            Thanks for sharing
