  • How Many Wedges Do Your Carry?

I have recently just added a couple of wedges to my bag. I didn't realise that most pitching wedges are around 47/48 degrees as the guy at the golf shop tells me. My next wedge was at 56 degrees, that's a massive 9 degrees difference. Here I was struggling when I had shots which ended up in between these 2 clubs. I know the professionals carry a lot of wedges so I made a couple of additions.

I now carry a pitching wedge, a 52, 56 & 58 degree sand wedge. Being a longer hitter I find this should cover all bases when I get closer to the second shots on par 4's and 3rd shots on par fives.

How many do you guys carry?

I carry 4. A 60 deg Lob, a 56 Sand a 52 Gap and 48 Pitching, all Mizuno MP R's. I love wedge play especially with my Lob wedge, I like opening the face and making high flop shots that land soft and check up. I also like to use different wedges out of sand depending on the type of sand, how wet it is, how far the ball will carry and roll out.

I carry four wedges -- pitching wedge (Taylormade Burner), and 52/7, 56/8 and 60/8 KZG 9500R wedges (loft/bounce). The club maker where I got the KZG wedges recommended the low bounce angles for the fairly heavy sand at my home course.

I would rank wedge play as the second most important aspect of the game next to putting. I love hitting wedges and spend a lot of practice time with them.

I used to have the same setup as Brian, until I got new sticks. Thanks to "loft creep," the new pitching wedge is 45 degrees (compared to 48 degrees with the old set). With the new set almost a whole club stronger than the old set, I opted to go with the 50 degree approach wedge available for the set, ditch the 52 degree gap, and keep the 56 sand and 60 lob. I've been thinking about going with a 54 sand, but after a few rounds I decided it wasn't really necessary (for me, a full 56 sand wedge = 90 yards), as I don't have any yardage holes inside 125 yards with this setup.

        Cheers, GB
