  • Correct grip?

I remember some time ago I used to hit slight draws with driver. Now I hit fades .The thing is that I can't remember when the change came. I think it just slowly crept in with me eventually making adjustments in my set up. I only noticed when a mate said "why do you set up with closed club, you've been doing it all day?" I really looked closely at things and noticed that I'm setting up and am unable to see those top left hand knuckles. Could this be causing fades, pushes and slight slices? My back is giving me trouble, so I haven't been able to work on it. But in 2 days we will be near a driving range(1 1/2 hrs drive away) and will be dialing in my new R9 supertri and would like things technically right.

    Re: Correct grip?

Peter, you will fade if your swingpath is inside the direction your clubface points at impact. Check to see if you have started swinging out to in, try placing your driver head cover on the ground just behind the ball at the range and make sure you dont hit it.

      Swing Path

Yes I agree with Brian. I used to hit a slight fade and tried many times to strengthen the grip and make slight adjustments. The reality was I was coming across the ball with an outside swing path and no matter what sort of grip changes the ball was always going to continue to go left to right.

I would also look at ensuring you are getting a natural roll of the right wrist through the impact zone. This ensures you are squaring the clubface correctly right at the time of impact. Don't overdo it of course!

      All the best

          Re: Swing Path

Sorry, to hit you all this, it may be related
I have discovered that as per a golf lesson long long ago, being corrected to a inside out problem. I look now and seem to have an exaggerated inside out. I straightened it up a little and it helped some. Really this has been going on for a long time. I did the 2 knuckle grip as I am sure it's helping, at the moment it feels like my hands are fighting each other, but is easing. This alone gave me some major distance gains, and straightened me up. But there is still a problem where the ball starts down the center left and right turns at the end. Heel shots have plagued me for a long time, nothing any one has generously suggested has worked. I actually snapped the head off a Speedline when it said enough. This is not the usual suspects. I have managed to get them center to heel and not "hozle", don't know how. I reckon the fact that I gain 30 yds if I get a center shot with this driver has me looking at this again. Now I am not saying sometimes, impact tape shows not a single hit center toe none, zero, zilch, it has confirmed the wear pattern on the face. I am sorry to have hit you with 2 problems but maybe they're related. I feel I am on the cusp of a great drive technique because it is definitely repeatable !!

            Re: Swing Path

first of all, try using a lighter grip pressure. make sure you are using your fingers to hold the club. when you set up to the ball, try bending your knees first until you're in a comfortable and athletic position and then holding your club in front of you, bend your hips until the clubhead is aligned properly to the ball. make sure you're not bending your knees more as you are doing this, just your hips. and try swinging at 80% of your normal swing at first, getting the rhythm and tempo right. don't worry about losing distance as this will come back once your timing is right and your clubhead is hitting the ball at the sweet spot.

Yes, I have similar advice from another source of info.I am so glad nobody has chanted same ole, same ole as has happened before. Finally I have a shot at it again. I simply can't dismiss the substantial distance gained with this club when struck well. Now ...if it would only stop raining.

                Re: Correct grip?

It's obvious to me ,and to you I suspect, that I'm just not getting the club turned over to strike the ball as per set up and just don't know how one can "consciously" do that given the split second it all happens. I am sticking with my grip as it works on everything else including my 3 and 5 wood, and I have thoroughly checked that I am holding it correctly. While it has been raining non stop for two days,I have busied myself with club work and decided to try an oversize grip, can't hurt.

If you have problems with squaring the clubface then maybe keeping it square throughout will help you. Take a look at this video:

                    Re: Correct grip?

Well Brian, we might be onto something here.Still raining and I'm buggered from sitting up all night watching the open but I put black dots on a whole heap of wiffle balls and used the ten finger grip out in the yard. Blow me down that is the first time since I can remember having marks centre to toe. Amazing. And only a few on the toe ,the rest were centre None on the heel at all. The only problem I had was too high or low on the face. The wiffle balls do no damage of coarse but the ground put a good gouge in the sole of my virgin R9, damn. You know, I can live with that just seeing all those dots around the centre. What do you reckon, a ball position thing or just misses? I am just so happy with the immediate improvement. Nice video by the way, it was what really prompted the change.

                    Regards Peter

Aargh, I heard the ten fingered grip is for old men but let us know how it works out... Perhaps most amateurs would do well w a strong grip.
