  • Backswing Problems

Hi Lads here's a video of my lesson with my local pro, he says i lift my body up on backswing and this causes me to lose my spine angle.
I have also noticed that my right knee straightens on backswing and my lack of wrist hinge at halfway back is flat.
Any help and drills would be appreciated lads.

    Cheers...

    Re: Backswing Problems

Dont be concerned too much about your wrist hinge, you do hinge them up-and-down rather than by rotating the forearms, I like this as it keeps the clubface square, just let your wrists break at the end of your swing so the club drops ontp your left shoulder, this will feel more fluid.

You are straightening your right knee in the backswing and this is not good as it will create inconsistency and get you swinging off plane. Try turning your right foot in a little, this will help you to stay inside your left foot in the backswing and retain the knee flex.

Brian thanks but on a before video on my lesson I was lifting my body up on the backswing, do you think once i start to bend the right knee it will help this.

            Re: Backswing Problems

There are three things that turned my swing into a consistent one
            1. keep my head over the ball and keep it there
            2. keep your legs in a relaxed slight bend and quiet throughout ( your left will bend slightly through the swing, but don't let the back leg lock.)
            3. Keep your shoulders parallel with the ground throughout the swing. No lifting going back and especially no dropping the right when swinging through.
Trust your set up and remember that's how it must be when you strike the ball

OP - IMO, the main problem is the shoulder turn. The shoulders should turn basically perpendicular to the spine. Since you are leaning over the ball, the left shoulder will move "down" and the right shoulder will move up, relative to the ground, as you turn. Draw a line drawn from shoulder to shoulder at the top and see how "flat" your’s is, relative to your spine angle at address.

Notice how bound up your neck and left shoulder are at the top. You are straining to even see the ball because your LEFT shoulder is too high. You are lifting yourself out of your spine angle and also straightening the back knee. In association, I would also try not to intentionally lift the arms so much as this is lifting the left shoulder also, IMO.

For you, a good shoulder turn will feel like the LEFT shoulder is severely dipping down, and/or the RIGHT shoulder is getting very high, until you get used to it. Use video to confirm you are making a proper turn, and then learn what that feels like. This will get your hand up, so you won’t have to lift them so much. It will also give you a better view to the ball.

IMO, your other issues are secondary and may work themselves out if you make a proper backswing turn.

If I was to add anything it would be in what looks likes you have quite a bit of tension throughout...just look at how restricted your follow-though is. I know it is hard to make changes to any swing AND stay relaxed. Eventually you get comfortable and relaxation can then set in. But try to actually relax all your tension at setup and through the swing. This should give you a greater freedom of movement and generate more power - believe it - with less effort.
