  • I have put my swing on utube. Would welcome suggestions

I have had troube pushing my approach iron shots and ending up right of the green. So, I have uploaded my swing on utube. The first swing is the one I was using and now I believe the backswing was too far inside creating and in to out. The second one is what I am working on and would appreciate comments on it please. Funny, I could drive miles and straight with the first swing but approach irons a no no. This is the link.

    Any help well appreciated.

Hello Bri. There only seems to be one video, I cant find the second.

On the attached video your problem seems to be straightening your back leg in the backswing, this encourages you to lift out of your spine angle and your hips turn back too much. This gets the club stuck behind you in the downswing and creates the pushed shots. You are correct that you are also taking the club back too far inside and this is also assisting with the club getting stuck behind you.

You need to keep your back leg flexed throughout the swing, try and limit the amount your hips rotate into the backswing, this may shorten your backswing but dont be concerned too much about that.

When you take the club away feel as though the shaft traces back along the extended ball to target line for as long as possible, for the first two feet of the takeaway imagine you are using the club exactly like you are making a putting backstroke, these things will stop you takeing the club too much to the inside.

When you start your downswing start it by turning your left hip back and kicking your right knee forward so that it pushes up against your left leg. This will allow your relaxed arms and hands to whip through and make powerful straighter ball flight, but that right knee MUST stay flexed in the backswing.

Aha Brian. There is only one clip. The first swing in the clip is where I found out that I was coming well too inside. The second swing was my attempt at correcting it! But it is amazing what you have hit on. 10 years ago when I was a 20 handicap I went for a video lesson. The guy spotted straight away the leg straightening bit! 2 days later, I hit a net 63 and won my first ever competion! So, it seems that it has crept back in. Thank you.

hi Brian ,,,,taking a look at ur age ,,,,u are over swinging thinking you must get the clubshaft to the horizonl position in the backswing which in turn is making you come out of ur spine angle,,, this thought is probably why you straighten your right leg on the backswing. Try and make ur backswing without moving ur right knee cap,,,,,it can rotate a bit but no lateral, forward or backward movement and keep the bend in the back leg in your backswing.this will tighten and shorten your backswing like you wont believe,,,but will really load into that right leg..ur swing will feel like half a swing but you will the strike ball with power and grace and hit a lower penetrating ball. just like the pro ,,,let me know how you make out

I did try this at the range dagoos. But got in a bit of a muddle. Started shanking the ball.

Hi Brian - I would straighten your back. It will allow you to turn and keep some resistance in your lower half. The way it is now the only way to turn with a hunched back is to allow your hips to go with your back. This would then make you unable to unwind with power robbing you of all your distance. If you look close you can see that your hips turn well past 45 degrees and almost turn the full 90 degrees. Only your shoulders should turn 90 degrees.

It could be that your hips get so far around you cant get them back in time so you are still pointing right at impact hence the pushing right.

Thanks Tony. I see your point. Will try it at the range.

Hi Miffin ,,,,ON your back swing concentrate on keeping your right knee in one spot,,and keep it inside your right ankle, with all the movement of your right knee you are not loading the shaft of your club,on you back swing your weigth should never go past the centre of you right foot,,,,if it does it is a major power leak,,,the reason your are shanking the ball is more than likely you take the club to far inside and have to come ott to get back to the ball, when you get to the top of your backswing ,,try starting your downswing by swinging your left forearm away from your right shoulder first and then fire the body ,,,little more arm swing little less body turn ...the arms will pull the body through the shot if they are swung ,the body picks up on the swinging arms and clubhead and do what they are suppose to do TURN and get out of the way ,try it and let me know ,Im 58 yrs old and hit drives 280 and 290 ,people tell me I swing like freddie so try it and let me know dagoos

Re: I have put my swing on utube. Would welcome suggestions

I know I've said for years that I'm a club doc, not a swing doc... but I've been to "harvard pre-med", so I'm now a swing doc in training. The swing model I follow is the Rotary Swing Tour at the Rotary Swing website - it's the biomechanically correct swing I've been searching for since I started golfing.

                    Here's what I see, Brian.

Address - you're bent at the upper back and your chin is buried in your chest. I'd like to see that upper back straight and more bend at the hips. This will allow you to rotate more freely as well as allow you to pick your head up while still seeing the ball.

Takeaway - you yank the club inside with an early bending of the right elbow. In fact, your clubhead is barely past the back of the mat and the elbow is folding. This is going to set the club deep and behind you unless you fight like the dickens to keep it in front of you.

Top of the swing - there doesn't seem to be too much seperation between hips and shoulders; it looks like the hips have over-rotated to allow you to get your "back to the target".

Downswing - I see the "bump" left to start, great stuff there, but it looks like your hips and shoulders are still closed while you throw your hands at the ball - this is robbing you of distance. Keep turning those hips out of the way - everything else will get pulled through and your brain will put the club on the ball for you.

Impact - it sure looks like you manage to barely clear your hips as your hands come through. It's alright positions, but as I stated if you'd keep turning the hips (after your bump to start the downswing) there'd be plenty of room and you'd be able to hold that lag longer.

In the second swing, the takeaway is pure, pure hands and you pick the club straight up. For a simple, repeatable takeaway, slide your scapula (shoulder blade) down and in towards your spine and allow your shoulders to rotate around your spine while keeping your arms passive. This one move (the scapula moves ~2") will have your takeaway perfect in no time.

Thanks Dagoos and Lowpost. I am particularly interested in trying the (scapula moves 2) thing. Just tried it indoors and it seemed so much easier to get a body turn. I will take it to the range and see what happens. I take it that I have read that corrrectly?

Sounds like you've got it Bri. Keep pulling with that scapula - and only focus on that - and you'll achieve two things: your shoulders will end up at 90 to the ball, and your hips at 45 (barring any deforming/restricting injuries). All without thinking about shoulders and hips or feet or knees!

hi Again miff,,not seeing your swing from face on ,I also see you have a major power leak in your rigth arm, it folds beyond a 90 degree angle,,,again only fold your right arm to 90 degrees ,,,think of the top of your swing as forming a box with your club-shaft,forearm, and bicep,,,, this is a common mistake in amateur ,,,,one that is badly overlook,,, this box is actually formed about waist high ,if you maintain this box ,,u will see that u will no longer be able to swing theclub back as far as you have been ,,,cuz you are creating PROPER coil, also your head is a balance point in your swing let it follow your swing ,,,,dont forget the right knee one spot also , Im goin to Florida next week to work on my game,,,,,

Thanks Dagoos. I am trying to work on these things. But for some reason I can't even get to the range at the moment, let alone the course.

Inconclusive. A swing with a ball would be nice. We all swing better when there's no ba' there. Jeez.
