  • Clubface closing during backswing. HELP!

    Hi guys, I need help.

I feel like I'm setting up nice and square, feet, knees, shoulders and clubface. But something happens during my back swing. It's causing all sorts of problems from hooks to ... sssssshhhanks .... Needless to say, I want to not be doing this any more.

After these shots happen, I hold the club infront of me and return to my address position and the club face is closed. I don't mean slightly closed, I mean one time is was so shut that the toe was pointing towards the target, despite me being square at original address, and despite me feeling that the club hasn't slipped through my grip.

The only thing I can think is that I'm holding the face open at address, but I've tried everthing to prevent that. I've even held the face wide open and still hooked the ball.

Wonder if any one can help. Failing that, who wants to buy some golf clubs?

Re: Clubface closing during backswing. HELP!

Try this drill to check your grip. Address the ball as normal then stand upright with your arms straight out infront of you, dont alter your grip. Swing the club around you as if making a baseball type swing, now return your arms straight out infront. If the clubface is open or closed then adjust your grip by rotating your hands clockwise or anticlokwise on the grip as required in the opposite direction to that which the leading edge is out of square. Repeat the process untill you can swing then return to the front with a square clubface. This will indicate how your hands need to be placed on the clubshaft.

Re: Clubface closing during backswing. HELP!

      Thanks for getting back guys.
I seem to have sorted it out - for now.
I did something like BrianW suggested, and found the correct place to set my hands.
I think it might have been something to do with my wrist hinge. I think I was addressing the ball with my left wrist flaired out (with my hands actually a little behind the ball), then when I returned to the ball, the left wrist straightened out, closing the face.
