  • Best Practice Tip

    Ok folks,

No more than say 20 words.

What is the best practice tip and why, that will give any player greater consistancy in the golf swing.

    I'll start:

Practice your set-up everytime you practice because this is the start of your swing if this is wrong the swing will be wrong no matter how good.

Do your best and have a good weekend.

Best practice tip for a beginner:

Pre shot routine: Have a pre shot routine that is short and meaningful. With a good routine comes comfort over the pressure shot in the big game.

Your routine should be limitted to 1 practice swing and should include lining yourself up to the target.

        Hi All,

I just taken up golfing, would like to find out how to carry out a pre-shot routine and what to look out for? And can it be short and meaningful?

        Thanks.

          Davios26,

A pre shot routine should be short and meaningful as Gord says, the main points it should have are:

          * Note the distance to the green and pin position
          * One practice swing to feel the shot you want to play
          * Stand behind your ball to align your shot up
          * Maybe through some grass in the air or watch the trees to determine the wind direction.

Any other little mannerisms are up to the individual but try to have all the above in your preshot routine. You will find the more you concentrate on the above the less you worry about hitting the ball.

          Hope this helps

          Ian.

Exactly. The more sports I play, the more I find they all have similar ideologies. In basketball, they talk about the pre-shot routine for free throws. A pre-shot routine is short, and is designed to relax you, and lets 'muscle memory' take care of the task at hand.

I don't know if you've ever experienced this, but after taking two swings (and having two horrible mi****s) when thinking waaaaaay too much about a shot, I'll often just walk up, address the ball for spacing, and take a rip at it. This results in a great shot - a little off target (because I didn't bother to aim), but trajectory etc, are nice.

My opinion is that a pre-shot routine allows for the same 'no thinking' approach, but with much better aiming.

uh huh I'd agree with set up. As numerous pros, books and videos tell the pupil, if you can't address the ball correctly it's highly probable that you won't hit the ball correctly. For every shot you play you should give yourself the best chance of making a great shot So I say, "Stand at attention, Stand at ease, Bend from the hips, And flex the knees"

The best tip/drill I know of is one that builds a fluid backswing. The bacswing is the make-or-break of your game. Not many errors happen on the downswing but many happen on the backswing.

I like to teach students to start the backswing ahead of the ball. Address the ball with a mid-iron and start the backswing a foot or two passed the ball. Swing back to a complete backswing and then swing down into impact ...

It is a good pre-shot routine too, not just a practice drill.

So many things go wrong with forward presses, picking the club upwards, starting the backswing outside or inside the line ... all sorts of horrors!! The drill helps to get the feeling of how the backswing should start, how it builds and how it should be completed - all in a flui motion, it doesn't start with a jerk or a press or an "anything else".
