  • Which Grip should I use? Vardon or Interlock?

I have started learning golf with a baseball grip (split handed) and have now been told I should move on and choose a grip that brings my hands together. The pro told me that this works better, does anyone know why? and if I should move off the baseball grip as I really have grown to like it? Are there any pros who use it?

The grip you use is a personal preference. That being said, the overlap or interlock would be he best way to go. The reasoning for this is when your hands are intertwined like they are in the overlap or interlock, they will tend to work together, or as 'one'. Your hands are your only connection to the golf club so you want the best contact and control you can provide with the grip you choose.

The interlock grip is a grip that is more benificial to people with small and slender hands. I started with the interlock when I was 10 so it was the preferred method for my size. I am now 6'2" and the overlap would probably be better suited to my hand size, but the interlock is so comfortable after 18 years of using it I don't even notice. If you have large or stubby fingers you may want to go straight to the overlap grip style. It is far more comfortable to learn which makes it easier to embrace.

Thanks Gord, I think I will give the interlock a go as my hands are quite small.

I've been using the Intermeshing grip now for about 20 years. It's slightly different to Greg Norman's grip. Take an Overlapping grip(Vardon) then insert the Pinkie on your right hand between your pointer and middle finger. It's a very solid grip, excellent for controlled Iron shot. The downfalls are you can't use it for bunker plays as the left hand takes over and closes the club face(in bunker play I use and overlapping grip), it also restrict a more fuller swing arc and you lose some distance. But I have been playing between 6-9 for many years and I put it down to this grip as it keeps me in play more often. Try it and let us know.

                Re: Intermesh Grip

Yes I've seen this photo many times, my grip is sightly different as I have longer fingers so the nails of the pointer and pinkie sit just on the palm. As I have said its a very "solid" grip that may feel strange at first but it does have some pluses i.e. control.
You also have to be very aware in this grip and all golf grip of one hand being more aggressive than the other as this will either open or close the club face.
Let us know what you think.
