  • Driving Range tip

Last night I when to the driving range for my usual midweek practice only I forgot to take my golf shoes as they were drying at home from Sundays drenching.

It's thirty minutes drive and at 7.00pm it was to late to drive back home, now this is the problem, I drove to the range in my hard plastic slippers......

After the initial disappointment I decided to hit a few anyway even if only with a wedge, as you can imagine plastic soles on a plastic mat, ice skating springs to mind, needless to say I looked a proper plonker.

Once I started hitting balls with a few longer clubs subcontiously I must have slowed the swing down enough so I did not end up on my butt, I was hitting ball really well and in perfect balance, no great distance but just a very good training session.

It might not work for anyone else but it's got to be worth a try, just wear slippy shoes though not silly looking slippers.

    hope this helps

    Ian.

It sounds almost like Greg's 6" drill for balance. You forced yourself to swing within yourself (or end up on your butt!).

It might be a nice way to warm up!

On a side note I always start a practice session with a wedge. If I start with a driver I'm tempted to give it a good old thump straight away and that's something which is not advisable. For me, at least, tempo and rythem are the hardest things to control over a period of time, especially when you try and add a few more yards to your shots. I find that starting with a wedge helps me to swing more east throughout the session.

        Thanks Ian,

This is an excellent point. One thing I learnt this year about practicing was when I attended a European Tour event and saw the guys practicing on the range. Every single one of the guys that I saw started their practice session with a short iron like a wedge and were swinging I would say 50-60% of the their normal swing speed for that club. I truly is an amazing site watching such smooth and controlled swings. As their practice session went on they would move up the clubs until finally hitting a few drivers.
