  • Advice would be nice

    Hello,
My swing often results in a pulled shot. I am right handed and often when finishing I want to, or actually do, fall forward a little to the right. A shot from
behind has my club disappearing too early. My backswing is not too bad it
it the downswing from hip high through the ball that is not too good. How do I correct it? Thank you.

A pulled shot is an out-to-in swing path with a square clubface at impact. You could be casting from the top (using your right side to try and hit the ball - like in baseball). Also, trying to kill the ball combined with casting will put your weight out over your toes, causing you to fall to the right throughout the swing.

The only other thing I can think of that might be causing your pull is if you're swinging on line, but happen to be getting your arms waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out in front of the rest of your body. This would make for a short, low pull-hook.

Do you find yourself struggling to stay balanced through your swing? If you're swinging too hard, (swinging out of your shoes, as they say), your pull might disappear if you swing in a way that you're balanced from start to finish.

From what you have written, is would say LowPost nailed your problem right on. Remember to draw your power from your legs. Your legs need to lead the downswing which will turn your hips and inturn your torso will come around as well. Do NOT swing with your arms - they are only there to keep the club on plane.

Thank you for your wisdom LowPost42 and gord962. This pull shot is inclined to appear when I try to hit it hard. Somedays it is not really too much of a problem, but when it appears, I was struggling to understand why it happened. I just wonder though, if I am right handed, isn't is natural for me to
use the power in that side? Thanks again.

Actually, Ross, that's the problem. Because you're dominant-right, your natural tendency is to use the right side. In beginners, this causes slicing (as the club moves out to in, and the club face is often open). In better players, it causes the pull (as the club face is now square, but the path is still out to in).

Something to try would be to keep your right side as uninvolved as possible during your takeaway and swing. I used to have a real problem with casting and a big right shoulder push (robbing me of both distance AND accuracy).

My swing coach advised dropping the idea of rotating around the spine, and replaced it with reaching across my chest with my left arm, using my upper arm only to move the club. As you reach back and away with the left arm, your shoulders will turn naturally. If you keep your right side limp, you can really tell when you've pulled with your right shoulder as opposed to reached with your left arm.

Just to add to Ben's reply:

what you want to do is rotate around your left hip. Your left hip should act as a gate post - it stays solid and everything else moves around it.

When you pull a shot it is because your upperbody is overactive. Your shoulders have come around too soon and you have changed your intended path by doing so.
