    Re: My takeaway trouble

The fastest way to get more distance is to swing a longer driver. Please keep in mind that you will lose accuracy.

That said, if you can keep your swing speed up, and lengthen your takeaway, you'll get more distance (more kinetic energy to put into the club head).

Your takeaway should ideally come straight back. It will always end up coming inside.

What is more important is being in the right position at the top. First, get into your address position. Then bring your arms up to parallel to the ground so that your shaft is pointing straight in the air. Nest, turn your shoulders 90*. This should put you in the correct position at the top. How you get there is no where near as important as starting your downswing from that position.

Quick tip for your takeaway. Break it down into three distinct motions.

First bring your arms back until your club is parallel with the ground. Second, cock your wrists. Third, turn your shoulders to 90*. This should get you into the same position I described earlier. When starting out with this drill, make sure you stop in between each motion. As you get familiar with each position, start to blend the three together until you can get to a nice steady pace.

If I'm not mistaken, (and I might be), but to a large degree, the takeaway is the determining factor for most players' swing plane. So, I would avoid the outside plane. For most OS drivers, I've often read that the takeaway should be low, slow and long. So I'd take the club straight back for as long as possible - eventually you'll have to come inside as you get to the top of your swing.

But if you swing down the exact same path you take the club away on, you may want to come inside shortly after you start taking the club back.
