  • Wrist Cock

    Hi ..

does anyone know any really good drills to get the sensation of a good wrist cock. I seem to get the club caught behind me on my backswing causing me to lift the club to the top .. eventually causing a horrid over the top move. Apparantely this is because of lack of wrist cock

    cheers

Take the club back slowly. As you approach the top of your swing, the club will fall naturally - cooking your wrists.

This is what you are looking for - the Right hand drill.

To get the feeling of wrist cock try my 3 part backswing.

First, from address, bring your club back so it's parallel with the ground, only using your arms. Then, cock your wrists so the club is pointing skyward. Third, turn your shoulders 90*.

This should put you in your proper position at the top of your backswing. Work on these 3 moves sperately until you feel extremely comfortable. Once these are natural, start blending them together until you have a smooth controlled backswing.

          Gord,

Good drill. But reverse step 1 and 3. Make the first move the shoulders, then the hands, then your arms can now raise up. Otherwise you are shortning the length of your swing-arc.

            Greg,

Once the 3 moves start blending into 1 move, the shoulders do end up moving first. The problem is that most people tend to think their arms need to move farther than what is really necessary and their left arm breaks down at the top. This drill works on how little wrist and arm movement is really needed compared to how important it is to get a full shoulder rotation during the backswing.

Not 100% sure that a lack of wrist cock is the problem. A lack of wrist cock doesn't normally result in "getting stuck". In fact, a lack of wrist cock will push the club in front of the body, not behind!

I'm taking an educated guess because I haven't seen your swing but it could be that your club is travelling too far to the inside on the backswing causing a flat swing plain. (Like Sergio Garcia's "old" swing).

Take a 6-iron and swing back fairly quickly until your shoulders are at 90-degrees. Then stop, fold the arms bringing the club onto your body and tell me where the club touches your shoulder. Take a pic if you can too.

Post the result and I can try to help you from there.
Your problem is not likely a lack of wrist cock, I am certain of it.
