  • left arm at the top

i have a very similar build to tiger- 6'2 , 190 lbs. and noticed that his left arm with his new swing almost covers his right shoulder at the top. Is that something i should try to copy as well, because my left arm is about an arms width above the right shoulder.

thanks to all who have helped in the past.

    Hi Kurt,

I am of similar build, 6'2", 180 lbs. I am like you, left arm is higher than the right shoulder. From what you are describing, the left arm is almost parallel to the ground, making the hands too low.
If you look at Ernie Els's swing, his left arm is higher than the right shoulder. Probably the best example of a great swing you will find currently.

i meant when looking at your swing from behind. my left arm is not parallel to the ground. My left forearm/bicep is just above the top of my shoulder. My shoulder plane is fine, just wondering if i should make it slightly flatter like tigers. My misses are a push right.

        Sorry, I misunderstood...

To have the same arm angle as Tiger you would have to have the same spine angle as Tiger. If you are still not sure, try this:

In your address position, raise your arms to parallel in front of you. Next, cock your wrists so the club is pointing skyward. Last, turn your shoulders 90*. This should put you in the proper position at the top of your backswing for your stance and build.

The best way to do this is with a mirror so you can keep an eye on yourself.

thanks gord, one last question. I have been struggling with my hip rotation on the downswing. Sometimes when i start the downswing i have the feeling of turing against a firm left leg and i hit the ball very well, others i kind of spin my hips out a little and that throws my right shoulder around my body, rather than coming straight down. Do you have any suggestions for helping me turn into my left leg more without spinning my hips?

          Thanks for your help

This could be a head problem. What causing you to spin your hips? Are you trying to put a bit more speed on the club head? Does this happen only under pressure situations?

Work on some 1/2 shots and 3/4 shots. This will keep you from doing a full turn and a chance to work on the fundamentals of your turn. When working your way back to a full swing, remember to keep a nice tempo. The golf swing is approximately 3 seconds. Don't be afraid to count out loud. From the start of the takeaway to the top of the backswing you should be up to 2 and at 3 you should be at impact.

i just came back to the range, and found out the reason i was spinning my hips was that my head was not moving back at all in my backswing. I started trying to get my headto move with my backswing and the next 50 shots or so were perfect.

              thanks for all your help
