  • Regripping the club...

Hi fellas, first time posting here, but I love the site and instruction here. I had one simple question for now, and that was what would cause me to regrip the club on the backswing? Seems like I only do it on longer clubs, ie woods and driver, and it seems like im trying to reach back for more backswing and let go of the club with the last 3 fingers of my left hand. When it does it, I can feel the club sort of move in my hands and it feels uncomfortable because I dont know where the clubhead is gonna be. Thanks for the help, and keep up the good work on this site.

    Deec73,

    Welcome to GTO.

This is usually caused when you have a long (lazy type) swing as appose to a short faster swing, very easy to cure.

Just few a few visits to the range take a £20.00 note roll it up and tuck it in between your last three fingers of your left hand and the butt of your club..........Trust me you will not re-grip your club again.

    Hope this helps

    Ian.

      Re: Regripping the club...

      Welcome Deec73.

Well, the grip is a serious problem because the grip determines the face angle throughout the swing. Any change in the way you grip the club has a direct effect on the club face angle.

Regripping the club is more common than you might think. I see probably 2 or 3 people a week who do the same thing.

There are a few things that cause it:
      1. An incorrect grip at the setup and you feel as though you need to "do something" to get it corrected. This happens most often with average/advanced players who can feel an error in the grip or club alignment.
      2. Your hands may been comfortable at address but somewhere through the swing they start to feel uncomfortable and need to move to gain comfort. It's not necessarily that your grip or hand movement are incorrect, your hands just feel uncomfortable.
      3. Incorrect grip size or smooth grips often cause golfers to regrip as well.

Regripping is often quite difficult to solve because very often it is part of the swing movement or it becomes a "mental problem" ... like any habit, it just takes work.

I'd suggest you just stop regripping the club! Problem solved!

Seriously, Ian's guidance and drill often works. It's very simple but effective provided that you start off with a good grip. Start off with that drill or instead of putting a 20 quid note:

+ Put a tee between the pad of your left palm and the grip and another between the V formed between your right thumb and pointing finger.
+ Keep the tees in place throughout the swing.
+ Alternate between 10 swings with the tees and 5 without for a while until the problem goes away.

Okay? Good Luck and if you need more help ... GTO!
