  • Keeping Weight Inside Back Foot

Is there something you can do in your setup to help keep your weight inside your backfoot on the backswing? I notice my weight shifting outside that foot, but I wouldn't really call it a sway... I tried adding a little more knee flex but that didn't help.

Re: Keeping Weight Inside Back Foot

I've had this problem in the past leading to inconsistent contact. There are a number of simple practice drills you can use to eliminate the "sway".

    1) Raise the heel of your backfoot at address and take a normal swing. You'll transfer your weight to the ball of the back foot so it's either on the insider or centred. If the weight moved further outwards you'd fall over!

    2) If you stand on a raised mat at the driving range set up so that your front foot is in front of the mat and lower than the back foot. Again as you swing it will be almost impossible to move your weight to the outside of your back foot.

    3) To practice good weight transfer and balance hit a few shots on the range with your feet very close together. Start with half shots and work up to a full swing. Again if you transfer your weight too far to the back foot with this drill you'll fall over.

Once you've got the feeling through the drills one thing you might want to include in your set-up on the course is a slight kick of the back knee towards the front as a swing trigger. This does a number of things but again helps to prevent your weight transferring too much to the outside.

I think that adding a bit more knee-flex would exacerbate rather than alleviate the problem as it allows you to roll your ankle more.

Generally speaking try to keep your legs inactive during the backswing rotating with the shoulders and hips to get a full turn. The drive from the legs comes with the downswing. I've worked a lot to quiten my legs down and it's made a world of difference.

    Hope this helps
