I came up with a smooth set-up drill that works well for me and I'm wondering if it seems good.
Basically, I start by taking my grip with the club shaft pointing pretty much straight up.
Then I relax the club completely, while standing in an upright position (straight legs and back). The club hangs in front of me, with my arms resting against my belly. I can really feel the turn of the club to the left as my forearms relax. I can then make any adjustments to my grip to ensure that it is square.
At this point I address the ball. While still in this upright position, I stand over the ball, lining up the head to the exact position that I want it to strike the ball. The head hovers over the ball at this point. I adjust my alignment while looking at my target.
I then flex my knees a bit and bend from the waste while pushing the club head straight down behind the ball. This leaves my back straight, and about two fists of room between my belt and the end of the grip. I feel extremely athletic in this position, and the club feels far less awkward.
Then I take one more look at the target and swing easy, making sure I do not increase my grip pressure.
This seems to work pretty well, and I have shown my friends and they seem to like it to. So I figured I'd see what you guys think.
If I can stay focused enough to do this preshot routine every time, I feel confident that my ball striking will be at least decent for a round. It doesn't always go perfectly straight, but it goes a consistent distance.
I'm still like a 20 handicap, but I have a lot more confidence knowing that this preshot is there when things start to go bad.
