Had a lesson with David Pirie at World of golf.

He said my swing looks good, but is too long (overswing) and this is why i'am spraying bals all over the place. He also said im not releasing my hands and i need to loosen my grip.

Does anyone have any drills for shortening my backswing?? Releasing the club, and softer grip.

He also said I need to keep an eye on my ball position, as i tend to place it too far back!

    thanks

You need to have a mirror available to check your position at the top - then you'll have to feel for that position.

As for grip pressure take your club back to hip height and stop. Loosen your pressure a little bit. If your club doesn't shift or fall, you were holding on too tight.

Loosening your grip might solve the problem of your hands releasing, as there won't be nearly as much pressure and tension in your hands and forearms anymore.

I used to over swing, the reason for my overswinging was I lost my knee flex and overturned my hips. So I focus on keeping my flex in my right knee the same through my whole backswing.

Now in my backswing my hips turn with my shoulders and arms on my takeaway, until my club hits 9 O Clock. From here I just bend my right arm to a good l shape and my shoulder keep on turning and my hips don't and I have a good coil without overswing.

This is great advice. In the lesson I had this weekend the pro said I was doing much of the same stuff, grip was too tight, not releasing the club, not on plane etc etc; so when I started to lighten my grip pressure the club started to release before I spun-out with my ‘fast’ hips. It also gave me a better sense of where the clubface was at the top because I could now feel the weight of the club. It does take some very conscience practice though, because my old habit is still to tighten up as I go back. So I practice for hours now in front of the mirror.
