Hi, I am new to this site and it seems great. Anyways here is my problem, I have been playing since the beginning of summer 2004 so less than 1 year. I have days when I can play extremely well then days that I cannot. I am a big guy so my swing is a little different. I am trying to get a post of my swing video in the upload area but it isnt working right... In my video there is an obvious chicken wing. I retain my lag angle until about 3/4 down the swing and it looks like I come over the top. My usual bad shots are straight pulls. With the driver it is a slice. I am wanting some help on how I should stay inside, some drills would really help. When my timing is on I can play great. I believe I am on plane for my height, 6' 4" but its all in the last part of the downswing. I hope I can get a video posted soon. I will be posting my video face on and down the line shortly. Thanks a million, Jon

Re: Help fixing my major swing flaw
Jon,
First, find out where the correct position at the top is:
In you address position, club in hands, raise your arms to parallel. Next, cock your wrists 90* so your club is pointing skyward. Last, turn your shoulders 90* away from the target (with left shoulder over right knee). This will get you into the proper position at the top.
Then to get to the above position with your backswing, try this:
Again, in your address position, start your backswing with your arms only (I know, backswing is supposed to start with the shoulders - we'll get to that at the end.) When your CLUB gets to parallel, stop. Cock your wrists 90* so your club is pointing skyward. Last, turn your shoulders 90* away from the target (with left shoulder over your right knee). This should get you into the same position as the above drill. For the first few times, try these drills infront of a full length mirror so you can see how it looks.
As for the second drill, keep this as 3 distinct moves. This drill is to teach your muscles to how far the arms, shoulders and wrists move. Once this is engrained and you know how the stretch at the top of your swing feels, start SLOWLY blending the three parts into one. As you get closer to your natural tempo, use your shoulders to start the take away, as how you are supposed to correctly start the take away.
A few things to check - at the start of your takeaway, when your club is parallel to the ground it should also be parallel to the target line. At the top of your backswing your club should be parallel to the ground and the target line. Also, at the top of your backswing, your left shoulder should be over your right knee. Another position to check at the top of the backswing is the 90* check: right upper arm is 90* to your right side, forearm and upper arm are at 90* and hand and forearm are at 90*.

Re: Help fixing my major swing flaw
My videos are posted, check them out,
Face on and down the line. My problem again mainly is the I guess reverse chicken wing after my downswing and into my followthrough. I am going to try what Gord told me to do. Making my hip turn start before shoulder. Any other suggestions?

A new highlight: Golfing the home course on Christmas Day.
I say it too often: If it's golf club shaped, you can play with it.
For the record, I'm a club doctor, not a swing doctor.
Re: Help fixing my major swing flaw
You've got the chicken wing at the top, yes. Your takeaway looks fine, but from the top I can tell that you're not about to pull with your left side, you're going to push with your right. This can cause a cast or 'over the top' movement, pushing the clubhead outside the line, forcing you to have no option but to swing outside in.
It looks like at impact you've flipped or scooped your wrists... something doesn't look right, I think it looks like your hands didn't get through the ball first, the clubhead did. Your hands need to get ahead of the ball before the clubhead every time.
On the plus side, you don't seem to sway, or reverse pivot. You seem to coil over your right leg, just like you should.
At the top, I should be able to see your right elbow under your left arm. Let your right side fold up - let your right hand go along for the ride. I think you're pulling with your right side to get to the top, judging from the video.
And again, pulling from the top with your left side will help to get your hands in front.
Check out http://www.golf-tuition-online.com/v...ead.php?t=1466 for my struggle with a swing similar to yours.

toyotajon93.
Try holding your right shoulder back when you have reached the top of the swing and let your arms drop away from your right shoulder and inside just a touch, you must still retain the angles "Wrist/arms" you will now be in plane again ready to comlete your swing.
If you like many golfers including me at times, start the downswing with the right shoulder too active you will only play catch up and pull & slice your shots.
Hope it helps...
Maybe a better word to use would be feeling that your right shoulder stay's back... but I know what I mean lol :Last edited by Cliff; 02-12-2005, 12:20 AM.

Re: Help fixing my major swing flaw
This is an interesting thread. My instructor has me focus on my left shoulder, pretty much ignoring the right. It seems that the effect is the same, it's just looking at it from another direction, so to speak. If I keep my left shoulder up and dominate throughout the swing, all the rest of the elements she's got me working on fall into place pretty naturally.
As an aside, my "mentor" is an LPGA teaching pro.

Re: Help fixing my major swing flaw
I've been working hard on feeling that pull with the left should just for the last few days now and it's already paying dividends. Walked 9 saturday and hit some of the straightest driver ever and avg around 250 yards. Still getting the hang of it with my irons, I was also told I need to position the ball a little further and get my back straight because the ball being so close it's almost impossible to come in from the inside that away. I'm going to get to the range tuesday and try all these things. Ball positioning, and pulling with left and keeping right passive. Any more drills anybody knows for getting my hips to turn first without having a partner hold the club?
