  • Very frustrated with Swing

Gentlemen, thanks in advance for taking the time to read my post. I have been playing golf now for approx. 4 years and have become increasingly addicted to the game. I've taken 2 sets of lessons (with mixed results) and still have problems with my downswing. I am told by friends that as I begin my downswing I open up my left shoulder (I'm a right handed golfer) and this causes me to take an outside to inside swing pattern. As a result I sometimes "cast" my club and usually wind up slicing a lot of my balls. I feel this happens more frequently when I swing my longer irons and my woods ( I seem to do much better with my short irons and wedges).
As a former weightlifter I worry that I concentrate too much on using my shoulders only to drive the ball. Is there a drill out there I could use that would help this problem with my swing path. I've been hitting a lot of range balls, but I feel I'm just further promoting a bad golf swing. Thanks in advance for any help in this matter.

Hi, an interesting site is www.golfbetterproductions.com and seems to make sense. espy. 1st move down is not to the ball but back to the plane. Check it out and see what you think. Also, keeping the hands no higher than waist level while you coil seems to paint a Hoganistic pic. take care, Greg

Try not to twist your shoulders around your spine to swing. Try keeping your right side quiet, and just pulling through with the left.

        Hi Fitz,

This is a common problem with big guys, powerlifter type looks etc..........

Because your shoulders are probably very wide and strong you are tending to hit the ball with your upper body.
When you started golf like most people it takes a while to sink in that this is not a macho power game it more about flexability and timing.

A very easy thing for you to work on..........providing you are comfortable that you have all the fundamental set up positions correct...when you take the club back try to start the downswing with your lower body first....no swaying but turning your hips towards the target......try to keep the shoulders quite until the hips go first.

You will no doubt hit a few bad shots at first but it will come after a few balls.

        Hope this helps.

        Ian.
