  • From draw to SLICE!!!

    Hi,

It all started 2 weeks ago when my regular draws began to go a bit to much to the left. I starded making some swing adjustments and the results were a huge Sliceing problem. It really REALLY stinks. I'v been trying to go back to my old swing but it doesn't work.... It's gone

What should I do... should I take a brake for a week or so to see if my muschle memory forgets this terrible swing and goes back to my old swing???

My handicap is 6.9 if it helps.

    Thanks,
    Saemi

Spend a buck or two and head to your local instructor. See if they can find out what you're doing wrong.

Identify if your swingpath is correct (ensure you are not coming over the top) and if your clubface is square at impact: http://www.golf-tuition-online.com/v...rticle.php?a=3

If these don't help, you'll need to give us some more info - which direction are your divots going? It the ball starting off left or right before the slice? Which way did the ball start when you used to draw?

        Re: From draw to SLICE!!!

You have fallen into the "teaching yourself" trap. Instead of making small adjustments with an instructor to weaken the draw, you've overdone it and now your swing has gone to sh*t.

Okay, describe the ball flight to me ... we have to start there. That's the sypmtom-reader of golf instruction.

But, I think I know what you've gone and done becuase I get to see it fairly often.

Thank you all for your answers!!!

Ok... now my ball usually goes left then right, but not always sometimes it goes straight then right. Ok that tells me that I'm coming from the outside and probably also with my club head open I really don't think that I'm coming over the top but I'm not shure!

TeachingPro Please do tell what you think!

          Thanks

This is what I think ...

Your swing path is slightly ouside-in, but not by much. If had changed to way out-to-in it would go violently left first. Almost without excpetion changes in ball flight are caused by poor body movement (gross motor control) and not grip or hand movement (fine motor control).

Whenever there is an incorrect ball flight, instructors always check gross motor control first. No matter how bad the fine motor control is (within reason of course) the error will not result in an extreme ball flight.

You need to get your swing more inside-square-inside first, then work on the club face as a second step. First gross motor control, then fine motor control.

Right, first a few things about practice:
            1. Always tee the ball up
            2. Never hit more than 60-80 balls at a time (1 hour max)
            3. It's quality, not quantity
            4. Focus ONLY on 1 thing during practice and don't judge the results of your practice on the resultant ball flight, judge it on how you feel you are executive the 'thing' you're practicing.
            5. For every swing, check all your fundementals (grip, ball position, posture, alignment)
            6. Always allow 3-4 practice sessions before you play again.

Here are some drills to do. Focus on 3 things:
            <1> Swinging inside-square-inside
            <2> Good weight transfer
<3> Co-ordinated swing where you hit through the ball rather than at it

The drills will help you redefine your balance, help you get the feeling of an inside-square-inside swing and good body movement. It's not your hands that make you slice (that is a myth), it is poor body movement.

Check to make sure your ball position and posture haven't changed. Before you panic and want to revamp your swing, go back to the basics...your basics. YOUR ball position...the posture YOU had when you were striking it well. And triple check your grip.

                  Re: From draw to SLICE!!!

The bottom line for slicing or hooking is the clubface is NOT square to the line of flight when the ball leaves the face! So any curvature in ball flight is either an "under roll" - fade, slice...or an "over roll" - draw, hook. The key is to educate YOUR hands.
