  • The ball gets in the way

I mentioned this sight to a guy at work. He has an interesting issue but I know he will never wind up posting a question. He explaines it this way-

He takes practice swings and they are smooth with good tempo. When he puts the ball there he says it all goes out the window. He says it's like the ball gets in the way of a good swing.

I suggested that he pretend that the ball is a bubble and just swing through it. He said he's tried that line of thinking and it doesn't work. I didn't really have any other suggestions.

Anybody ever hear of this problem or have had this problem? I'd like to pass along some words of wisdom to him on Monday if anyone has any.

Re: The ball gets in the way

This is a very common problem. The problem is that he is trying to hit the ball. The purpose of the golf swing is to swing through the ball.

Something you can do to help him is to go to a driving range when it is empty or very few people around. Have him hit balls blindfolded or with his eyes closed. This may sound dumb, but you don't need to see the ball, just have to be set up correctly to the ball. If he takes a few practice swings, place the ball down for him and he should be able to make contact with the ball. I'm not saying they will go straight but that's why I suggested there is no one at the range!

This is the way I teach people to stop 'hitting' with their putts. I have used this myself at the range (competitions with friends to see who can hit the ball the farthest blindfolded). Let us know if he is willing to try this and if it worked!
