  • Tall Mans Correct Club Length

I am a tall golfer (6'3" tall) and from my wrist to the ground is 39inches and from my fingertips to the ground is 32inches. My clubs were made with 1 inch longer than normal shafts but when I setup to hit the ball I am more at the 2 oclock position instead of the 1 oclock position with my spine/back angle. Do I need longer clubs or just need to stay at the 2 oclock position and work from there. I am a 13 handicapper and am trying to knock off those last few strokes to get to single digits. I have no problem with my short irons and hit my 8 iron 150yds. My long irons give me problems and I usually do not get as much distance as I should with them. From my previous post since I have a toe strong divot I am going to have my lies adjusted to hopefully correct that problem.
Thanks in advance for your help,

Well, from a static fitting perspective, your clubs are still 1/2" short. (For 6'3" and 39" static fitting says + 1.5").

What you really need to do is find a clubfitter in your area, and drop the bit of cash to get fitted dynamically.

Static fitting is a fine place to start, but you may need more than an extra 1.5" on the shaft - you may need your lies adjusted as well. I take a standard length shaft, but like my clubs 1/2* upright. My swing is that much more free and easy with just that extra 1/2* - because I don't have to factor anything in. Just aim and go.

Get the lie on your irons adjusted before adding length to your shaft. This will affect your stance and make the clubs feel longer.

Hey gord, I did my measurements after seeing this post. I am 6'3" my wrist to floor is 36, I have really long arms. From my wrist bone to the tip of my middle finger is right about 9.5 inches. Long hands and fingers as I told you. I have my irons 2 degrees upright and 1/2" longer than normal. Thats how they came from the factory. I am also using the jumbo lamkin crosslines, those feel the absolute best to my hands than any other grip. Should I invest on getting longer shafts and adjustments? How much does that usually cost? Thanks

Oh yeah if I get longer shafts should I get them spined as well? Is it worth it?

If you get new shafts, it's well worth it to have them spined or pured. It helps all the clubs to play more consistently.

Jon, get equipment that fits. You wouldn't play hockey in pads that didn't fit, you wouldn't play soccer in shoes that didn't fit, you wouldn't play baseball with a helmet that didn't fit - don't play golf with sticks that don't fit!

Getting lies adjusted is about $2/club. For shafts, there's two options. One is to completely reshaft (can get expensive, depending on the shaft), and the other is to have extension put in.

See your local club fitter - and enjoy gear that works for you!

              Gord,
Should I also have my fairway woods lie adjusted also.

If you are getting clubs adjusted, take your whole bag in and get the club fitter to check all your clubs - Driver through putter. Who knows what he/she might find!

Sorry Jon, I somehow completely missed your question!!

Depending on your need to spend money.

Cheap: cheapest way is to do nothing, but if you are just adding length to your shaft, simply put shaft extensions in. It would make much more sense ecinomically.

Expensive: If money is no object, then sure get them reshafted. You may be able to salvage the pull outs for re-sale or use them for drills, etc.

Mid Point: If you are concerned about spining your shafts and are going the shaft extension route, you can simply have your shafts pulled, spined and realigned. It's all up to you!

Thats o.k. I am thinking of getting them reshafted, no way to salvage grips are there? I recently got regripped and love my grips, those jumbos I was telling you about. I think i need to reshaft and go up to a stiff shaft. Seems like I really lauch my ball high in the air and my old irons were stiff shafts with much lower more piercing ball flight. Would going to a shiffer shaft help this? I am sure my swing speed is high enough. I hit a 5 iron around 200 yards. I think I will go to a place on the other side of my town, they have a launch monitor and I will see what they say. Let me know what you think about the shaft and high launch and what would be best in your opinion. You havent led me wrong yet!

Re: Tall Mans Correct Club Length

(almost) all grips can be saved.

The easiest way is to blow them off with an air compressor and a little grip solvent.

The old school way is to inject grip solvent under the grip, and use a reamer to pry it off.

The blow off is easier, faster and less messy.

But yes, your new grips can (and should) be saved - just ask your clubfitter to put them on your new shafts!

Re: Tall Mans Correct Club Length

From what you have said, you are definitely capable of having stiff shafts in your clubs. The stiff shaft will help out with accuracy and it will take a bit of the height off your shots. Your distance will suffer slightly, but a small price to pay for accuracy! Most clubmakers won't blow your grips off - it cuts into their profits by not being able to install new grips. Although, if you are getting new shafts and a lie adjustment, they just might. How many rounds have you played with those grips? How many balls have you hit at the range? If you have played over 50 - 75 rounds, it's probably time to replace your grips anyway.

Re: Tall Mans Correct Club Length

I would say around 25 rounds, and lots of range time, but they have lots of wear left, those lamkin crosslines really wear nicely. I cant really tell any real wear yet. I will talk to that golf shop, it is supposed to be a very nice place. With how high I lauch mine right now wouldnt that help me make more distance? I mean I really launch some of the high, especially my p-8, they are a high launch club, slingshots are like that, but I think so high sometimes it harms distance but that may be a illusion. Thanks gord, your always a great help!

No, no further distance with stiff shafts. Because the shaft is stiffer, it doesn't flex as much, which will reduce the amount of whip in the club which reduces the clubhead speed at impact. Although, if you are lengthening your shafts, this may counteract the distance.

Oh o.k. I gotcha, let me ask you if this would make a difference, the kick point. Right now I have true temper speed step shafts in regular flex, those shaft have a low kick point and makes them really launch the ball high, if I go to a stiff flex mid kick or high kick shaft what difference would that make with my distance and accuracy. Also I was just curious, if my setup is correct should the toe be slightly off the ground to allow for it to flatten at speed? If so how much should it be toed up? Thanks gord
