    Re: Weight shift

Remember with a short iron your backswing shouldnt be long, so you shouldnt be turning your shoulders quite as far back (if you are you may be overswinging with the short irons hence the problem?)

      Re: Weight shift

I have also been wondering about the weight shift.... I was practicing my swing (irons) without a ball - this price of winter and condo living in Toronto - my weight shift and pivot seems to be okay. However, when there is a ball in front of me I have big trouble co-ordinating my rear leg pivot and connecting well with the ball. I suppose the pivot should occur just before or at contact with the ball, so you have the benefit of the shift in weight....

        Re: Weight shift

        Guys,

Me and my buddy were discussing this at the range last night, there is alot of talk about weight shift in the back swing.....however when I have my lessons and the pro videos my swing I only move about 3/4 inches off the ball, there is no reverse pivot and my shoulders are over my right foot.

Last night we had a Nike promotional at the range and two pros were there hitting balls, of course we stood and watched with jaws dropped as there drives cleared the back fence............this got us talking about weight shift as both pros hardly moved of the ball infact one look almost stationary over the ball, but they obviously made great "turns" with the upper body.

I have also noticed this when we go to the Benson & Hedges and the British Master every year, all the top players hardly move off the ball.

My point is you turn your body and your head moves a few inches back away from the ball....thats it.

Don't start sliding in an attempt to shift your weight.

        Hope this helps.

        Ian.

If you want to make sure it feels right, get some1 to hold the shaft when your backswing is about 9ocklock, and tell them to not to let go until they can feel your hips going through first and not your hands, thats what my pro told me, and i did it with him!

Good stuff Ian - but this sticks out. A slide is best left at the playground. It has no business in your golf swing.

Arh, the sliding, to make sure you are not sliding / pivoting take up your stance, and get some1 to put up a umbrella or stick next to your right leg ( right handers ) and take your swing, if you nudge or move the unbrella or stick it means you sliding, dno if this helps?

                  Re: Weight shift

There's a difference between a hip slide and spine tilt.

I employ the latter, and avoid the former.

Steve had a good point (similar to the table drill) to check for the hip slide. Ricky, it sounds like you're talking about spine tilt - keeping your hips still, but moving your head and shoulders a couple inches away from the target. And it certainly helps to get 1) behind the ball, and 2) help load up the trailing side properly, avoiding the reverse pivot.
