  • Every shot is a hook...

My club pro has been working with me on my hooking problem. I bring the club way inside out and im working on fixing that. By doing this my club pro says im trying to flip my wrists over at impact causing a hook. Even when i do swing the club down the line, I hit a hook. My grip is weaker than it should be (both Vs are pointing somewhere around the right side of my neck). Also, my shoulders are usually open to the target and my feet are pointed right at the target. I would appreciate it of someone knew what I might be doing wrong.

    Hi David,

Check where you are are returning the club at impact:

If you are hooking the ball, you are closing the face at impact. Not only is it closed to the swing path, but it is also closed in relation to the target line. Keep your clubface square to the target on alignment and the clubface should alwys return there at impact.

I have been working on getting the clubface square to the target a long time now but I can't prevent my wrists from snapping over before and during impact.

In that case, try Greg's impact position drill:

Thanks, I hit about twenty balls in my basement after trying that drill and felt like I wouldn't hook it anywhere near as bad. I put impact tape on my eight iron and drive and found that I am still hitting the ball on the inside of the clubface. Can you give me any tips to help get the ball on the sweetspot and not the inside of the clubface?

This may be just as simple as you are actually lined up to the inside. Once you are aligned, get someone to check to ensure you are actually lined up to the sweet spot.

You may need to stand another 1/2 inch closer to the ball.

Check to see if you are the right distance from the ball. Your arms should be hanging loosely from your shoulder. To check this:

in you address position and your eyes closed, let go of the grip with your right hand. Now, let your right arm hang loosely from your shoulder. Sway your arm back and forth, towards and away from the target, parallel to the target line. When you are loose, bring your right arm towards the target, parallel to the target line until you hit the grip. If your hand hits the grip where you previously had your hand on the grip, then your distance is fine. Otherwise, adjust your stance until your arms are hanging loosely from your shoulders.
