  • Off the tee

Lately I've seemed to have developed a problem with my Irons off the tee. I seem to be loosing a lot of distance in the shots because I'm hitting them a lot higher. I have no idea where this extra loft is coming from become off the fairway the shots are as normal.

They also do have a tendancy got tail off right (slice).

The only thing I've (concisouly) changed in my game recently is keeping my right wrist passive through the swing.

I don't know why its happing to my Iron shots becasue my driver is going furthur than ever before. Its becoming frustrating now when i used to take a 5 iron to a Par 3 and now I can barely reach it with a 3 iron.

    Help!

    Release through impact

    Hi Keeks,

I am thinking maybe that the feeling of a passive right wrist might be leaving the clubface slightly open coming into and through impact. However you say that your driver is going better than ever. Now this is slightly puzzling...

However it could be that with your driver you have a slightly more aggressive swing which is encouraging your right hand to correctly release (rotate) over your left through impact resulting in a good strike.

I would try with your irons to let your right hand release as it should over your left through impact a little more. The feeling of a slightly more positive (aggressive) strike through the ball with your right hand. Be sure not to let your right hand become to over-active as this could result in some nasty shots to the left. The right hand should rotate over the left through impact (for a right handed player) and the opposite for a left hander.

      Hey Greg,

I got the feeling alright that I might be leaving the club face hope becasue a lot of the shots were going high and right.

But to fix it I need you to explain the explanation to me
I'm not sure what you mean by "right hand release" or "right hand should rotate over the left through impact". How does this work?

      Cheers

      Keeks

The reason you are lsoing distance is because you are casting the club, or other wise known as throwing the your hands and arms at the ball. When your right wrist straightens at impact, this adds a considerable amount of loft to the clubface, and it is left open at impact.

Drill: Stand next to a doorway with a club and take it down to the impact position, let the clubhead touch the doorjamb note how your hands are ahead of the clubface, and your left wrist is straight or slightly supinated, and your right wrist is bent at impact. This what impact looks like. practice this
