  • The Sh***s

I'm about an 8 handicap, mostly because of my driver and my short game. I usually hit my irons pretty consistently, and if anything, I usually play a natural draw. However, last week I went to the range, and I started shanking a couple, and it gradually got worse in the next 2 or 3 rounds, and it got to where I think I shanked 8 or 10 shots in my last round. I've never done this before. What are some of the common causes of shanking the balls out to the right?

Move your change from your right pocket to your left pocket. Turn your hat around backwards. Put a tee behind your right ear. It worked for Roy McAvoy! First thing is to stop thinking about it! If it's in your mind that you are going to shank, it will happen.

Check your distance from the ball. Make sure your arms hang loosely from your shoulders. Make sure you are swinging on plane. A shank is usually caused by an outside-in swing path. You said you have a draw, so that sounds especially strange. Work on those above and let us know how it works out for you!!

Thanks Gord. I'd bet it probably is just a head thing, I'm well known for over-analyzing everything. I'll just try to forget about it and get back to playing golf. I play tomorrow, so I'll let you know how it works out.

When i had the shanks, it was because of a reverse pivot. make sure you are pivoting correctly.

I think there are two types Sh***Ks.....one exactly as Gord says out to in swing...standing to close to the ball.

The other is a in to out swing with a wedge......a lot of players when chipping only, take the club to far back on the inside and then come through from the inside not squaring the face up and hitting the heel. A tighter grip when chipping causes the face not to square up.

            Food for thought

I just cried. And low and behold only a few short months later as quickly as it came it went again.

Mine were due to a tight backswing, I was so tense that at the top of my swing I had actually leaned over the ball more and couldn't get back into position quick enough. But strangely it only happened with my 7 iron.

Went to the range today and I'm cured. Completely just a head thing, but this isn't the first time I haven't been able to get my brain out of the way of success. Thanks all, especially Gord. I just turned my brain off and started hitting them right where I wanted.

                  Hey PATRIOT07

I went to driving range for a practice day before our 1st club comp of new season. I had the worst session i can remember, started great with PW, 7 no probs - looking great/accurate, moved to last 20 balls with 4i . Out of nowhere last 10 balls shanked.

I tried with another small bucket but the swing had gone, couldn't even hit a PW ( logically this can't be happening ).

I went home v.disappointed and very nervous about what was going to happen on course next day (mostly because I could ruin a good day out for my partners.)

Comp day - turned up early and went to practice ground, the plan was to relax and take every shot slowly and delibertate. Common sense tells me I am capable of hitting a good golf shot, time after time.

Anyway, to cut to the chase - this worked and I went on to record a v. respectable score with solid striking of ball.

Bottom line I have to share - my form of shank is due to - tension, and swinging too hard, too quick and lack of shoulder turn (more a sway) all caused from rythym and tempo being out of sync.

Cause :- mental/physcologial loss of touch and feel ( paralysis by analysis ). It is purely in the head and can be easily overcome.

Do NOT beat up on yourself - take one step back and feel for the rythym that is inside you and think simple.

                  Relax and enjoy !!

                  always,

                  G.
