  • left knee pointing in or out?

This obviously applies to right handers, lefties can just reverse the idea. Until recently I have tried to keep my left knee pointing sligthly towards the right knee (as that is what Hogan recommends in 5 fundamentals). I have a tendency to get stuck on my right side which causes slices and the odd shank. I then saw a tip on TV where they said to point the left knee outwards (i.e. towards the target not the right knee). This has improved my turn dramatically and I am not getting stuck on my right side anymore. I think Hogans advice on the left knee pointing in towards the right knee is wrong, anyone have any views on this?

Personally I am working a lot on keeping my lower body still in the B/S and thinking of turning down into my feet ( see other thread ) with my upper body. I like to think of the beach ball between the knees idea as a good one.

You want to keep your left knee from collasping in since this stops your hips from turning too far (buidling resistance and coil and thus the x-factor) and keeps you from swaying. It also shortens your backswing which for me is a good thing

So I too tend to set up with my knees a little bowed to help this feeling of keeping the left knees still. I find it really works for me so I would stick at it

Pnearn that point you and Ian make about the right foot screwing into the ground is a really interesting one and I am looking forward to working on it. I still feel however that for me having the left knee inward does not work. I tried to keep it in for months with no success and since letting it point towards the target I have been hitting through the ball much better. I can still keep the beach ball between my knees as the distance they are apart does not change through the backswing its just the direction of the left knee that is different.

Yep, I think were in agreement actually. By 'bowed' I mean thinking of your knees pointing slightly outwards at address and holding them there through the backswing

It works for me and obviously it sounds like it does for you too

Good to hear, Hogans setup is not for everyone. I am looking forward to working on screwing the right foot into the ground, I will let you know how I get on.
